Possibly, but the lose him for nothing to use him this year approach still wouldn’t surprise me. Not for a $9 mill guy signed on for $7 - Dozzer
I dont see the Tree doing that.
Not after Gaudreau
Plus the optics of not getting him signed and then losing his for nothing is not a look the tree would want.
Unless, the leafs do the impossible and win the cup. |

Willie’s value against Tarasenko is only $1.9 mill. Be used as nothing more than some cap space for a 13th forward, 7th d man, etc - Dozzer
If used now....but at the deadline when caps have lower impacts. You could get better player(s).
Also, 1.9m could get you much more than a 13th forward...buntings cap hit half that and he wasnt a 13th forward. We've seen late off season deals yearly. There would be options, but hopefully he signs |

Gaudreau was a more important member of the team
Like I’ve mentioned Nylander, even though he’s a top end player, is still just 5th or 6th in team importance…. And that’s the window teams use guys and let them walk for nothing… 5th most important to 10th
Who the hell knows though? He might be signed for 8 more years tomorrow lol
For me it’s just this…. Do the leafs want to lose him for free? (frank) no. Are they willing to though? Well…….. |

As it currently stands the $1.9 would come close to covering how far they’re over the cap hence why I said that. They already have the guys signed with a $5 mill guy replacing Nylander. |

Not an emoji guy but I agree with the sentiment man. Dumb a is not at all what I would think Tree wants - Big23Questions
Not sure why anyone wants Dumba except on a 1 year x 2 mil deal. He had one good season and has been on a steady decline.

I have no clue on value as evaluated by actual NHL GMs but I figure if they are semi retooling - having Willy in their Top line with Forsberg would be enticing. |

Getting really pissed off over what the Leagues are doing with premium games. I saw it in hockey, last season, on Directv. You could get most of the games, but ESPN+ kept most of the premium games for streaming. The Center Ice package omitted these games and the Regional Sports Networks were also missing these games. It's pure unfiltered greed and I'm not buying into this nonsense. They need a Bud Lite style boycott to put these leagues in their place. |

I met Harold Ballard, back in the '80's. He was an ignorant SOB. The Leafs actually turned for the better under Steve Stavros. He was a gentleman and I had great respect for him. - PrinceLH
Wasn't Stavros the guy who nixed the signing of Gretzky? They had a deal, but Stavros was having money problems and blocked it.

A friend asked me about this recently, and we thought that perhaps one of the better ways is to simply compare the player to their peers within that year and determine how much larger their points lead was over the next player as a percentage - because the number of games year over year did vary, but the subset of competition within a given year should have been relatively the same. I didn't have the strength of schedule numbers available or any other advanced metric to consider in this, so it was strictly using points by season as a comparative value. The top-20 leaders in NHL history:
Wayne Gretzky in 1986-87 was 41.53% ahead of the next closest.
Wayne Gretzky in 1983-84 was 40.49% ahead of the next closest.
Phil Esposito in 1973-74 was 40% ahead of the next closest.
Wayne Gretzky in 1984-85 was 37.5% ahead of the next closest.
Phil Esposito in 1970-71 was 36.84% ahead of the next closest.
Wayne Gretzky in 1982-83 was 36.73% ahead of the next closest.
Gordie Howe in 1952-53 was 35.79% ahead of the next closest.
Wayne Gretzky in 1985-86 was 34.42% ahead of the next closest.
Connor McDavid in 2020-21 was 34.29% ahead of the next closest.
Wayne Gretzky in 1981-82 was 30.66% ahead of the next closest.
Bobby Orr in 1969-70 was 28.33% ahead of the next closest.
Stan Mikita in 1966-67 was 27.84% ahead of the next closest.
Connor McDavid in 2022-23 was 26.61% ahead of the next closest.
Mario Lemieux in 1995-96 was 25.47% ahead of the next closest.
Gordie Howe in 1951-52 was 24.42% ahead of the next closest.
Gordie Howe in 1950-51 was 23.26% ahead of the next closest.
Phil Esposito in 1972-73 was 20% ahead of the next closest.
Wayne Gretzky in 1990-91 was 19.63% ahead of the next closest.
Bobby Hull in 1965-66 was 19.59% ahead of the next closest.
Phil Esposito in 1971-72 was 18.05% ahead of the next closest.
The things that stood out to me here, having not seen many of these guys play in their prime:
1. For a defenseman like Bobby Orr to do it, it was preposterous - especially to have the 11th most dominant scoring season in NHL history.
2. I had always thought of Gordie Howe as a good player who played a long time - not the best player in the league for YEARS who also played for a long time.
3. I knew Phil Esposito had that 76G/76A season, but I didn't realize that he was that dominant for that long.
4. Connor McDavid is ridiculous.
Edit: You're right though that this excludes some of the historical Soviet greats that we have no objective way to measure at all. - Monkeypunk
Since Gretzky is in this list so much, it reminded me of an article I read that illustrated how ridiculous Gretzky was:
- Gretzky won the scoring title by more than 70 points – six times.
- If Gretzky never scored a goal, he still would’ve recorded 11 straight 100-point seasons and won four scoring titles.
- Gretzky won eight consecutive MVPs at one point. In the NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB, no other player has won more than four consecutive MVPs.
- If you chopped Gretzky’s entire career numbers in half, he’d still be 17th all-time in points.
- Only five players have recorded 150 or more points in a season. Gretzky did it nine times, a.k.a. in 45 percent of his seasons.
- Gretzky is the only player to record a 200-point season, and he did it four times.
- In a two-season stretch from 1983-84 to 1984-85, Gretzky scored 23 shorthanded goals. He has the most shorties of all time at 73.
- Gretzky led the league in assists in each of his first 13 seasons, and 16 times overall – 80 percent of his seasons.
- If you only counted Gretzky’s seasons after turning 30, he’d still rank fourth all-time in points per game.
- Gretzky could’ve ended his career with a 1,370-game pointless streak and still would’ve been a point-per-game player.
* I always add one more: Gretzky is the all time leader in goals. But if you took every single one of Gretzky’s goals away from him, he would still be the NHL’s all time leader in points. That is madness.

No top 10 protection and you got a deal lol
Btw, I got to kiss the cup after the ducks won it because I jammed in a band for one of the parties so thanks for that - Dozzer
I’ll get to kiss it this year! I’m friends with one of the Vegas Knight staff. His day with the Cup is September 30th. We’re going to eat pasta out of it. This of course means that my dreams of winning it will be over tho.

Yeah. I think Willy stays and makes the run, and then we lose him...but not for nothing.
We'll lose him for space to sign Lindholm, Wilson, Sprong, or even Tarasenko if he looks like his past self.
I think Sprong might get locked up in Detroit if he proves his worth though.
