It's not a big deal, but I'm surprised Skarek re-signed after the Islanders locked up Varly.

He'll be the #1 in Bridgeport, which is a good opportunity for him. He may never play for the Isles but getting the lion's share of the starts gives him a chance to showcase himself

I just thought he would try to sign with another team.

He's definitely not ready to play in the NHL, so pretty much anywhere he signs he's going to play in the NHL. I believe the Isles own his rights still anyway.

It would have been nice if he was ready to backup and the Islanders could have saved money by moving on from Varly.

I don't totally disagree with your logic, but I think running all three of them down the middle spreads the already-thin talent even thinner. Also, the cap space cleared by moving Pageau probably doesn't really doesn't make enough room to add any type of significant scorer. The only guy I could think of would maybe be Kane because he's likely going to have to settle for less than he'd normally get due to his hip resurfacing procedure.

What might make sense, if he is even going to try and play next season, was if they moved Pageau and signed both Toews and Kane. Toews could play 3C and the top 6 would feature all of Barzal/Nelson/Kane/Horvat. Not going to happen and a semi-absurd pipedream but Toews, if he plays, would probably be on a close-to-veteran-minimum deal. A trade of Pageau and maybe Wahlstrom for futures could potentially clear the space needed as well as help start to restock the pipeline with some combination of picks/prospects.

Yeah, that's a concern for sure. Moving out, say, Pageau hopefully leads to, maybe not a top-line winger but another guy who could pop in some goals and play a predictable, responsible game. So, I think the idea would be the centers hopefully elevate a group of solid, but unspectacular wings across the entire lineup. The centers do the heavy lifting while players like Lee, Palmieri, Wahlstrom, Engvall, and [unknown new addition] chip in enough to make it all work.

I don't think it's a perfect setup; I just think it's better than diluting the undeniable strength down the middle in an attempt to beef up the wing...which I'm not even sure is accomplished by moving Barzal there. I see him as a hopeful question mark on the wing rather than an exclamation point.

Spreading the talent is the issue. I think the Islanders are going to have to load up on the top two lines. Kane would be nice to have for a year, but I have to think the Islanders will need to be a true contender for Kane to even think about signing with them. Toews on a one-year cheap deal would make sense as well. Islanders are in a very tough spot to acquire that true scoring wing. I do not think this Islander team is bad, but I think it will again be a struggle to make the playoffs and I'm just not sure they have the horses for a long run.

Kane I don’t think will be ready till December from what I’ve seen and Toews may not come back at all. Kane will more then likely not be close to 100% maybe ever again. I wouldn’t invest a penny in either even if they were available and willing to sign with us.

Huge question marks on both players. I might be more willing to take a chance on Kane on a cheap deal for a year. Unless something very strange happens, cannot see Kane making a huge difference though. Islanders need a young, fast scoring wing that can match with Barzal for many years.

My point being with Kane would be a half a year deal at best.

tarasenko would be a good debrincat consolation prize but, where do they get the cap space?
