I think the concern here is with his health AND the sample size. With Spezza (2nd overall) and Stutzle (3rd overall) their raw talent is apparent. 51 players scored 30 goals that season. How many of them got hurt or had the season Norris had (2 goals in 8 games which puts him on a what, 20 goal pace?). There's reason to be concerned - it's not so much about whipping on Norris. I agree that would be unfair
- AlfieisKing

I think Norris' contract was a bit knee jerk. If he was at 6M, even with the injury, folks would be much less concerned. He's best buds with Brady, so giving him an extra year might be strategically structured in a way that a) in the short term Brady looks on front office favorably and b) in the long term Norris can help lobby Brady to stay in Ottawa on his next deal. But it's a steep price to pay if he doesn't put up 70+. We will just have to see.

Damn. Who left the barn door open? All the Eeyores are escaping.

Glass half empty kinda group. Always something to complain about. The salary structure for this team is fine for now.

Last thing for Dorion to work on .... a trade to bring in a guy for the 2nd line so they can move Kubalik down to the 3rd line. Then improve on the bottom line.

- OttawaB

Man, it's competition. The goal isn't to get the glass half empty - it's to fill it so you win a cup lol.

I get what you're saying but the team can't look at everything glass half full. That 7th overall pick from 2022 was way more important to me than Tyler Boucher in 2021. You need to turn those into significant assets (non insignificant assets). The pieces from the Red Wings did NOTHING for Ottawa. Kubalik better be a 20-25 goal guy and play well because Sens won't see ANYTHING from the picks UNLESS they trade them. Those picks don't come into the picture until 2027/2028.

Just a thought, someone may have brought this up earlier but now that we don't have to budget for Alex D.... Why not take a run at William Nylander.... bit more expensive, but with Toronto's cap trouble they are going to be desperate to get him off the books.

If Willie's rumoured ask on extension of 10M+ is to be believed, I'd steer clear of him. Believe the Sens' salary cap is hard set at Brady's number for the next few years at least.

They only have 5million cap space and they still have pinto and Sokolov to sign
Can’t see anyone coming in unless someone going out 🤷‍♂️
And love to have Nylander but not for 10m 🫣

The $10M would have to be negotiable.
But realistically, we were going to have to pay Alex D anyways. They must have had a plan for that.

There is NO way that Leafs will trade one of their big four to ottawa.

The deal would be something like this: Batherson, Pinto or Brannstrom, 1st. I'm not doing that, are you?

Ya - my whole point was there's no deal to be made, but here you make a deal. I applaud you for not including Mathieu Joseph heh. Seriously though - Willie's ask is gonna scare away suitors. That's a fantastic asset with limited value. I feel for Treliving. He should be calling Chicago to see if he can get something done there - they have the money, which is scarce right now.

Re: Koneckny....

Tyler Toffoli netted a good hockey player (a former 1st rd but an rfa) and a 3rd rd pick. Is Travis K that much better? Does he have way more value than Toffoli?

Any good player (2nd line) at the trade deadline will net you the obligatory 1st, player, prospect. If it is a first line player add an additional 2nd or 1st.

So wouldn't TK from Philly cost the sens a 1st rd, prospect (Boucher) and a player (Branny, Thomson, Joseph....none of whom seem like Torts guys)? It can't be more than that?

My point is there are value players out there (Hello Bailey) that won't cost anything more than money and cap space.

And from a Philly prospect....TK has more value for them as a trade assest at the deadline, to playoff teams. I mean...look what TB spent on Jeannot?

I think barring a team or player caving, the Sens roster is pretty much set.

Kevin Francis, aka Mr. Kevin Lee, aka LawyerSens4Life, aka six other Hockeybuzz profiles who posted daily while Mr. Francis was an active blogger, was charged with fraud over $5,000 and disobeyance of a court order punishable by a $1,000 fine. He was paid $0 in automotive damages claims, and over $150 for three months of Hockeybuzz beat writer post content creation. He was glad to get it.

I can see the Sens being done and that this is the lineup heading into the season. But I'm not convinced. I still think there may be a deal out there to be made to improve the bottom 6 (or bring in a 2nd line guy to bump Kubalik to the 3rd line.

I wonder what roles Sokolov, Crookshank, Jarventie may play as well (although I think Jarventie may spend another year in Belleville ... only turns 21 this summer). I'm assuming Greig is penciled in on the 3rd line. But Greig/Pinto/Joseph is not exactly a top notch 3rd line. Scoring ? I don't know. But if you could bump Kubalik down with Pinto and Jospeh and Sokolov, maybe a bit better. Then a 4rth line with Kastelik/Greig/Cruikshank/McKeown. Sokolov can be rolled into and out of the 3rd line as needed and bumped to 2nd line for injuries.

For example , is it worth signing Josh Bailey then bringing in Crookshank for the 4rth line?

I think they need one more body. If that’s a second line player, great. But that’s unlikely. Bring in a guy like Bailey, have a few guys that can step up briefly and see if one of them sticks. Not perfect, but realistic.

Works really well for me and it is deeply appreciated.

We are headed into a new Sens era with a young and talented team and significant change in ownership. No need to manufacture controversy. Lots of things to talk about and Guest Writer has a done a wonderful job of being informative and leading discussion without driving a particular point of view. A+ from me.

Leafs on current salaries have 64.1% of cap committed to their top 6 salaries (Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Reilly, Nylander and Bertuzzi).

Sens on current salaries have 52.7% of cap committed to their top 6 salaries
(Stutzle, Tkachuk, Chabot, Norris, Giroux, Batherson)

The problem for the Leafs is their top players (Matthews, Marner and Nylander) will need new deals over next few years. The relief for the Leafs is Tavares at $11m is coming off the books.

The problem for the Sens is Sanderson and Chychrun will be looking for $8m deals. The relief for the Sens is Giroux comes off the books.

Conclusion for Sens: They have a better cap management situation than the Leafs and should be able to build a deeper roster. But it would be a mistake for the Sens to pursue Nylnader. Sens avoided a bullet when they moved DeBrincat's salary out.

Conclusion for Leafs: It would be insanity for them to deal Nylander. Most of their cap problem is self resolving with completion of the Tavares contract. Leafs have little depth on their roster now. If they trade Nylander they become a one line team.

The great thing about the Sens is next year they have about $4.2mill in dead cap space coming off the books and the cap is going up. They will have the freedom to make moves. Sanderson will eat up a lot of space but beyond him they don't have many spaces to fill.

If Sanderson signs they don't need to sign a D. Maybe only another forward, top 6 winger. If that.

Wonder what the hold up is on Pinto? He (and the Sens) should want a two year bridge deal.

Hold up on Pinto ...... could be 2 things (a "duh" comment)
1) Ottawa is working on a trade (not involving Pinto) and they need to know the cost of who they may bring in and thus what they can sign Pinto at.
2) Pinto and his team are trying to decide the length of contract they want ... 2-5 years.

Who really knows.

Did anyone catch what Brent Wallace said on their podcast (Wally/York/Ryan) regarding the official release of Mann, which apparently happened again ... but this time officially. Wallace won't comment until after Dorion is gone and will then speak to all the stuff going on in the front office.

What is this all about now?
