yeah, I guess that depends on how you view goaltending, when your goalie is the best player on the team it's kind of normal that he becomes the highest-paid guy, since he's your best player after all... that being said it's obvious that Price's cap hit quickly became an issue, with the salary cap barely going up, there wasn't enough left to build a proper team in front of him.

personally I didn't mind if the team was being structured around him, as I really enjoyed watching Carey play when he was healthy and could steal games by himself, but let's just say that a lot of bad decisions were taken as well, and ultimately as you're saying the habs never had enough fire power up front to win it all in the playoffs.

anyway I agree with you that it's nice to have a different philosophy now for building this team, with more focus on offense and speed.

the problem is, or was, that MB after the Weber trade didn't finish the job. he needed to find a #1C and he failed. yes Price was overpaid, but by what? a few millions? not really that big of a problem. but the lack of offense that was a recurring issue was never fixed. MB was always quicker to overpay bottom6 players than to find high end talent.
and letting Danault walk for free... and not replacing him... aie aie aie.
now lets watch the kids develop and improve, Suzuki, Caufield, Dach... the dcore. once they reach their peak in a few years it will be fun! in the mean time, patience.

Yep ... I'm not saying goaltending and defense aren't important, they definitively are. Defense wins championship after all.

What I'm saying is that having a potent offense is equally important and a more balanced approach is preferable than the ALL DEFENSE approach we had before.

oh I agree with that too for sure, things were very poorly managed, especially concerning the center position lol.

drafting and player development have also been very questionable, two things that definitely needed to be addressed to eventually make this team into a solid contender.

How many games did Price lose where the Habs scored 1 or less goals?

A poopload.

That was the problem, to your point.

The was Danault, but also Markov and Radulov and the Aho fiasco (where MB got played) and the further fiasco of getting Dvorak. MB did some good things, but to your point, he could not figure out how to get the job done. Panic moves just for the sake of moves, is not the way to manage a team.

Anyways, as much as I like Price, I am glad that era is over and the Habs could move on to do something different - management and on ice.

for sure. at least the team seems to be in good hands now, and I'm really liking how this rebuild is going so far.

yep, we would all like for it to go faster but it is impossible. bad contracts need to run out and kids need to develop. not much they can do other than making sure kids have all the play time they need.

People complaining that HuGo (yes, I said HuGo!) are taking too long to get the Habs competitive again do not understand that they needed to gut and replace a lot of parts/people/focus of the organization, get buy in for a new way of doing business (from drafting to development to the way the team is built to on ice play), on top of clearing poop contracts.

And they are still working on organizational structure - we recently saw some significant changes in the medical and rehab group.

I am tired of talking about the poop failures after failures for the last 30+ years, when it is obvious the new direction is (slowly) taking shape into something positive.

Does this guarantee the cup? No, you need some luck and good bounces along the way. But the environment is being put into place to at least be true cup contenders.

Maybe they success or maybe they fail, regardless, the organization as a whole is in much better situation right now.

would be nice if the process went a bit faster but at the same time I find they've been an interesting team to watch so far, despite the absurd amount of injuries during the last 2 seasons. they were losing a lot of games but the effort was usually there, and they weren't completely outmatched or disorganized very often.

Dishwashers are a must.

I have a little illegal Mexican, who I stash under the basement stairs when he is not doing the dishes. I sometimes let him out at night for fresh air, but only in the back yard.

Yeah, if I see the effort, I am happy.

So many games under previous coaches were there was little to zero effort... almost like they knew they were going to lose (especially if the other team scored first or has 2+ goals).

I get sometimes it happen, poopty travel, too many games, etc... but it should be the exception, not the norm.

trust me, you don't have to tell me, I notice that poop right away tabarnak

speaking of organizational changes, does anyone know if they hired people to build an advanced stats department? I think that is also something that was being overlooked by the habs in past years.

The Montreal Canadiens officially entered the world of advanced statistics Friday.

In a news release, general manager Kent Hughes announced the appointment of Montrealer Christopher Boucher as director of advanced statistical analysis.

Boucher becomes the first person to hold this position in Habs history.

He spent the last two seasons with the San Jose Sharks organization as a professional scout.

Boucher previously worked for the sports analytics and artificial intelligence firm Sportlogiq.

At the Montreal-based firm, Boucher was director of hockey services and analysis.

oh (frank) yes, I do have a dishwasher, couldn't live without one lol. but I find even the process of rinsing the dishes, putting them in the dishwasher, and then putting away all the cleaned dishes after still sucks.

also I see now how you like to treat my fellow midgets, wouldn't be surprised if he took his revenge, and we all learned here that you fatally choked on a quesadilla.

I do not even rinse my dishes, just throw them in the dishwasher and let it take care of it all.

And if you think I let that midget make me food, you are crazy! That is what take-out/delivery is for.....

By definition, UFA's are older players and that's not what we're looking for.
We're building a young team that can grow together over the years, getting a 30+ years old player makes no sense for us at this time.

Social media is a wasteland, as others here I've never had a Facecrack or Twit account. I value my sanity too much for that.
