Absolutely HORRIBLE deal for the Flyers! WFT Ek?

"What the EK?" First, if you want him to answer you.

Think we could get ROR in here on a one year deal? High dollar amount like 8 mil? Be a pure money grab for him and flip at the deadline

Nothing to do w Torts and everything to do with moving a guy you really don’t want on a young team. Did you want Hayes taking minutes away from a young player at 7 mill?

No brainer for the flyers.

If St Louis feels they are a player away from going far then it’s a good move. If not why bother. He’s not gonna age well and has as much interest in winning as Keith Yandle…

Interesting. Before Tortorella got here, the Flyers wanted him. Tortorella targeted Hayes before he even coached a game for the Flyers. He rode him, scratched him, took away ice time and alienated the player. To the point where the player was miserable and turned a strong first half of the season into a poor second half. Tortorella doesn't see the big picture. He devalued his own player to the point where they had to retain salary just to give him away and receive virtually nothing in return. Saying it had nothing to do with Tortorella is being misinformed.

How can they make the cap work doing that? Why would O'Reilly want to play here?

And I suppose YOU see the big picture ? The reason Torts did all those things you mention is to try and motivate him to do the things on the ice required for winning. Controlling center ice defensively is # 1 for a top 9 center. Are you going to reply to this and tell us all that Hayes controlled center ice on his shifts ? If yes, to what degree ? He is a 7 mill+ player with 59 pts as his high along with less than mediocre defensive numbers (-22 ?). Combine that with being injury prone and taking the occasional night off...maybe you should GM a team with a bunch of players who all match that description and see how it goes.

It's only a good deal for Philly if you believe that it's addition by subtraction. As far as a trade, it's not a good one.

No, it wasn't to try and motivate him. It's Tortorella's M.O. On every team he coaches he irrationally singles out some player. You don't seem to have a grasp on what the big picture was, so I'll inform you. The Flyers weren't going to win. They needed to maximize their assets and have some forward vision. That would've been done by continuing to play Hayes at center and giving him ice time to continue to build on what he did in the first half of the season. Instead, Tortorella did the opposite. Alienated the player, moved out of the center spot and down the lineup and devalued the asset. Losing a few more games would've really hurt the Flyers wouldn't it have? Can I tell you what maybe you should do?

Exactly. 18 goals, 54 points last season !! He's less than 3.6 cap hit. That's a GREAT move for STL. Briere should've got a 2nd at least with that cap retention. Must be something else going on

Um that’s not really how the nhl works. The coach does not play or pander to a player in hopes that next year the GM can get a 4th rd pick w retention instead of a 6th rd pick w retention. The coach hated the player. The fans hated the player, but a subset of those same fans also hate the coach so now they are left confused. It’s really just that simple.

They take a 3.5 mill hit for 3 years while they are rebuilding and get that guy out of his philly where he never ever should have been. Terrible signing by a bad GM who was trying to make up for the incompetence of the previous GM. Honestly, Kevin Hayes needs to be in a non hockey market where no one pays attention and they are just happy to be distracted for 60 mins.

At times he’s great in the offensive zone, but most of the time he floats around and then acts flustered when the coach is annoyed.

I don’t think it’s a good pick up for St Louis cause he’s not goin to move the needle and they will just stay a middling team. What’s the pt.

Um, yes that is how the NHL works. Tortorella was wrong to move Hayes off of his best position and was wrong to alienate the player. Unless you think that an NHL coaches job is not to put players in the best spot to succeed. If it's that simple, then how did you get it so wrong?

If Tortorella didn't screw it up, there was a possibility that the Flyers could've gotten a better asset. He put the team in a position where they had no choice but to trade the player. Put them in a position of weakness. That's incompetence from a coach.
