Avs are noticeably absent - neem55
I know I said "Western Conference", but I was being specific to the Canucks own division. If they don't get a top three spot in the Pacific Division their chances of getting a wild card spot are slim and none IMO.
The Avs have a perennial Norris caliber kid in Makar but they also had Josh Manson who's 6'3" 220 pounds, Erik Johnson who's 6'4" 225 pounds, Andreas Englund who's 6'3" 190 pounds, Devon Toews who's 6'1" 195 pounds, Bowen Byram who's 6'1" 195 pounds....they are nowhere near as small and slight as the Canucks defense. |

You're asking for a full-scale rebuild, like what's happening in AZ, that's not happening in Vancouver, never will with Aquilini as owner. Just start cheering for the Coyotes, they're doing what you want. |

Avs are moving on from Erik Johnson because he's not very good at hockey. |

Thanks tips! To your point, yes they are, he's not worth his 6 million dollar salary and he's now 35 years old. Salary and declining skillset are their reasons. That doesn't take away from the fact he's a large dman who played on their team, averaging over seventeen minutes a night, when the won the Cup two seasons ago. |

17 minutes a night is not a lot and as you say, his cap hit was well out of alignment with his contribution which is why it was so valuable to have their stars making as little as they did. I would describe him as more of a passenger on that incredibly talented team. Makar and MacKinnon and Kadri and a number of other very high skill players won the Stanley Cup. Erik Johnson was a serviceable role player who was present while that happened and he didn't (frank) it up.
I think the size obsession is overblown. Certainly, it's not a great idea to run all smurfs, but the Hatcher era is long over. The big boys need to be able to play hockey at a high level. Johnson is not that. He had some very gifted teammates, but he does not move the needle.
I mean, we have Myers and nobody likes him. |

I think after all these years Lefty finally got something right suggesting Hughes and Hronek are the skilled players now time for size and stay home D with a touch of toughness.
This is why I want Shimashev if they do keep the pick. - VANTEL
Sure he might make it in 3 years. Two left in KHL 1 for Abby to acclimate.
In the meantime. Sign guys like Mayfield, Graves and Soucy or trade for Stanley wanting out of Jets. The big tough defensive D to fill in around QH and Hronek. |

That’s exactly what the Canucks need, serviceable/affordable players with size in their 4/5/6 role on defence. This is where a young defenceman on an ELC would be an excellent fit for the Canucks. Someone like Mattias Samuelsson over there in Buffalo the past couple years.
I wonder if Cole McWard can fill that void for the Canucks? |

Lots of movement today. With STL/PHI putting finishing touches on Hayes deal, it sounds like Winnipeg is working hard on moving one of their big available guys. Some traction on PLD. Something to keep tabs on. #GoJetsGo |

If only Canucks had their ‘24 2nd round pick and not have sent it out for cap space for Bear. Maybe they could have pulled in Durzi. |

He is Yotes highest paid Dman @1.7 mil a year. He was minus 12 last year with 9 goals.
Think we need players to keep the puck out of our net more. |

Sounds like LA clearing cap and making room for PLD. |

Apparently it is not the NTC holding it up, it is other parts of the trade that are falling apart.

Girard and Makar. I agree with what you’re saying, but let’s be accurate. |
