Florida is barely a playoff team. They rode Bob to the final, and they might miss the playoffs next season. - shack67

They made the big trade and went from first overall to almost missing the playoffs. And now you want to credit that trade for their playoff success. One word sums it up, Bobrovsky. |

From Previous Blog:
I agree with this. From an outside standpoint I would keep Nylander all day. He plays much better in playoffs, provides elite Top 6 offence.
Neither is physical.
Marner kills on pk but is not good 5v5 defensively.
Leafs pk would be fine without Marner. They may get less scoring chances while on pk but really shorties typically donāt make or break making the postseason and are not very common especially in playoffs when teams are more dialled in.
Nylander is not good defensively (any situation).
Marner as a winger makes WAY to much cash.
Nylander next contract will still be cheaper than Marners current one.
34 scores regardless of who he plays with.
Leafs still make playoffs without Marner and itās crazy to suggest they wouldnāt. If you took 34 off the team they still make the playoffs.
Marner is a giveaway machine. He disappears (impact wise) in playoffs because he has less time and space to make his plays. It works regular season and in Jr but in the NHL playoffs it does not. His plays are super high risk at the wrong time.
Both are VERY good players. I personally enjoy watching boys creativity and offence. I dislike how opposed they both are to physicality though but real good wingers regardless.
Based on Cap & Return I trade Marner ALL DAY
- Big23Questions
Thank you for summarizing all my thoughts! Agree with all of the above.
It's a funny thing. The 80's and 90's are generally thought to be way more physical than today, but I actually believe Marner would have thrived back then.
These days, the larger average player size, and systems that get played to perfection, limit a player like Marner's ability to do what he does best. It sort of sucks, because during the regular season, it's a joy to watch him; he really may be the most fun guy to watch in the league, when he has time.
I doubt Gretzky would have been what he was in today's game either. Lindros in his prime on the other hand, would have likely been unstoppable today.
I just can't stand watching an $11M dollar player, get routinely nullified by a $2M opposing player, EVERY SINGLE PLAYOFF.
Rant aside, I'd love him to suddenly click and turn into Doug Gilmour every playoff. I thought he had it in him to do just that his first few years. Doesn't seem likely anymore.

Except Vegas and Florida.
Who are in the FINAL. Last time I checked you needed to get there to win the Cup.
Toxic positivity, Zez. You're blind. - fifty__missions
Well you're in defensive pessimism. Whatever Vegas and Florida are doing this year is irrelevant. |

No, Zez. I want the Leafs to *do something*, like both Vegas and Florida have done, to get better. That is not pessimistic. |

This is what I mean by idiotic. I have never said "burn it to the ground". Go ahead and continue to make poop up though.
And another thing - Carolina will most likely make a significant change to their core group after that sweep.
But whatever. Keep on keeping on shack! |

Yes, making a change to a core group that has utterly failed 7 straight seasons is pretty (frank)ing radical thinking, isn't it! |

I want a core piece moved to allow better balance to the roster, and a different style. Our core four are all too passive - nice, polite boys.

Presidentās trophy came before they changed their core. A hot goalie took the Habs to the final also. |

The game is grossly over coached absolutely. The systems in place and the assignments in every zone is incredible. A lot of the flow and creativity died as a result. Thatās why watching McDavid is so fun to me. His speed allows him an āoutā from the suffocating systems. There is no system to defend against a player with that level skill at that godlike speed.
Itās an odd opinion of mine - but I think the red line out hurt that aspect. It sped up the game and thatās good (except for head injuries) but it took away the need to play east west and that kinda Denis Savard, Lemieux etc., type of weaving and going in and out of guys with crazy hands and give and goās and all that went away.
It seems to be:
- stop a cycle or collect the rebound
- quick pass up
- then another to the far blue and in
Itās very repetitive that way now. I think to me thatās why I like watching McJesus - he almost winds it up and goes end to end through guys like Modano did.
Not saying they should the red back in but I just think the ātogetherā up ice as a unit where all those awesome plays happened are gone. |
