So roughly 25% of the teams are Canadian and they’ve only made the finals roughly 15% of the time. Or, ignore the first two years which is when the change was truly occurring then only once in 16 years making it 6.25% of the time.

And not one single cup win.

If you can’t see why 50% of the top 10 paid players are on Canadian teams you’re simply in a denial.

If a couple lotto balls bounced a different way it'd be 30% man. I agree there are unique circumstances for Canadian teams in the NHL, but overall I think Toronto has a lot going for it.

From David Alter

"It's hard to say where Ryan O'Reilly fits into the #Leafs plans right now. But what was notable at the season-ending availabilities last month: He was the only player to openly criticize his own play. That demonstrated an accountability worth keeping."

I'm saying ROR is back. All the pieces fit. I'm gonna dust off my parade plan from last year, it's still a gooder.

If the Leafs roster stays static, they're still near the top of the league. Will Boston be as good this year? Betting not! Tampa Bay? Betting not. Florida is an aberration. If the Leafs roster stays close to the same, they could be first in the Atlantic. A new coach, a couple of defensive tweeks and the ascension of Knies and Woll make them formidable. Now is not the time for a major retool, just some tweeks.

I was totally wrong about how Knies would work out. He looked like an NHL player right out of the box in the playoffs. Same with Woll. Good news for the Maple Leafs. I agree with Treliving's comment that you have to keep knocking on the door and tweeking. Getting the talent is the hard part.

Nope... most likely 12 th or so.. still very solid and firmly in the mix... but that D is older and slower and more prone to injury. Gio is firmly in the grasp of father time decline and Brodie ain't far behind. Luke ain't no spring chicken either. Riles was amazing in the playoffs.. but his inconsistency during the season was maddening.

Add to the fact that most here want half the roster turned over.. No way they can run that back..

I'm guessing that Holl being gone is an upgrade. They still have two young RD's that'll battle it out for the 2nd and third pairing. Gio can be like a player coach, sub in on back to backs and work with the two young defensemen Liljgren and Timmins. The forward lines will need a rework, with Bunting being too expensive and Kerfoot being too pricey. The Leafs do need to bring in a top 4 defender with sandpaper. If O'Reilly signs and goes to 2C, with Tavares moving to wing, that line should be fine. Willy is the wildcard. If he asks for more than $9.5M, he's as good as gone. In goal, they should move Samsonov's RFA status for a draft pick and ride with Woll and Murray. It's not rocket science to add in the bottom 6. This team has the horses, but need the warhorse to drag them further into the playoffs.
