I thought we'd been over this a few times and his contract was front loaded by like 500k. So, if he retired the cap hit stays. Perhaps I dreamt this.
- MattStrat

Yes, you are correct, front-loaded by 250k, so Pens are stuck with the cap hit unless he is traded.

hahha its so crazy. I think it was Feds that said agents will push for something like this so the contract is guaranteed...Hex probably didnt even have any concerns about this...or he didn't know, or understand, the rules.

This is my whole point. The cap hit us there. Just shelter him 5-5 and play him 1st pp. The pp would benefit and you don’t get nothing for 3 million.

But he could be useful bottom six scoring with a smart coach and then you don’t get zero for a 3 million cap hit.
- Grinder47

There's a lot of things to blame summer Sullivan for, but Carter being washed isn't one of them.

I'd much rather have Archibald back than Carter at 4RW

Bargain for a 2C once you get rid of Malkin in Hextall's mind

Ugh. It’s tragic what Hextall did in 2 years.

But is it worth adding value just to trade him? You’re limited on picks and prospects.

The bigger issues are petry and granlund.

Also the reality is the pens don’t have much in the farm that can score 10g in a bottom 6 role either. Dubas will be busy, I think there’s more pressing issues.

Don’t get me wrong hex was stupid for giving him that deal but there are worse deals that hurt the team more.

- sammy87

If it's a 3rd to 5th round pick, send it. Unlikely they ever become an NHL player anyway.

No it doesn’t his contract wasn’t front loaded.
- Victoro311

Yeah this is wrong, we looked into it, it's barely front loaded which (frank)s the Pens.

Severson sign and trade to CBJ. 8 years - 6.25AAV. I didn't think he was that good.

6.25 seems nuts but I dont really know all that much about the player other than what his stats have been since becoming a NHL mainstay due to a quick google search haha...I didn't realize he's old enough to be a 9 year NHL vet now. Thought he was much younger. His best season was actually 2 seasons ago. He'll be 29 when this coming season starts, I doubt he gets much better. He was also on that great Devils team. I dont know..on the surface 8 years x 6.25 seems a bit ridiculous hahah

8 years for a Severson caliber player is insanity.

The cap is reasonable. The term is not.

Unpopular opinion, but I’m kind of with you Grinder… outside of the Top PP piece… if he’s not going to medically retire you may as well use him… are their better options? Of course- but you sign a guy for 1.5M to play 4th line RW, you’re now basically paying 4.5M for the position… I think Carter 4th line RW with Poehling and another young, speedy, hard forechecking forward wouldn’t be the worst set up… Carter still has a great shot- he can hang high and wait for the grinding two forwards to retrieve and distribute the puck to him in the high slot.

Once again- I’m not advocating for Carter… if there’s a path to get rid of him great… but if we use our limited assests to ditch the bad contracts- we have nothing left to obtain replacements with…

I guess Petry, with only 2 less points in 20 less games last season, has a good cap hit too?

Carter has had a below average shooting percentage the last 2 seasons. Not sure that qualifies him as still having a great shot.
