He scored 12 goals in the hardest league in the world. While being mismanaged greatly. - Grinder47
We absolutely agree he was mismanaged greatly. Since I don't see that changing, I don't want him on the roster.

Only if he is in on it. I would guess that if you sat him down and explained the situation, he's no longer part of their plan, he might submit a list of teams to get traded to. - burgh4life87
Was just going to write the same thing. If he's dead set on playing, that might get him to agree with a trade.

As someone pointed out, by the playoffs Sully was giving Carter the scrub treatment. I don’t think Sully really values Carter as much as our bottom six just sucked ass so he didn’t have many options he deemed better. I think if Dubas gives Sully players he likes for the bottom six Carter will find himself in the press box real quick and will be much more amenable to being moved if he’s dead set on not retiring. Important to remember that he was heavily weighing retirement before signing his extension so I don’t think a medical retirement is out of the question at all. |

One player I really wanted them to target this offseason was Barbashev, but I have a feeling this playoffs is about to get him overpaid. - j.boyd919
Agree. Barbashev was my more realistic target behind Bertuzzi, but he's probably getting overpaid now. I might end up wanting to circle back to Zucker after all. |

I was confused on the methodology of this blog. How were these values created? Did it include young guys on cheap team friendly contracts to bring the average down? I don't think you're actually signing a top 6 wing for under 5M. |

How do you expect him to score more when managing him correctly means limiting his ice time or sitting him in the press box for at least half the games? - bchiaro
No it means not playing him in a Jordan Staal role, and with the wrong players for 95 percent of the season. |

Idk who wouldn’t want to get paid $3m to watch games, practice w pros and work out at world class facilities?
He will never make this $$ again.
I doubt a team takes him on unless value is added.
Can’t buy him out.
Can’t demote him.
Odds are carter is here to stay.
Maybe he can retire due to health on ltir. Wouldn’t bet on it. |

Yes, odds are he's here to stay. But Dubas needs to explain he'll be watching from home. Just tell him there's no roster spot for him.
Retirement on LTIR seems unlikely to me. I honestly don't know how much the NHL investigates "injuries", but I imagine they'll look pretty closely at it. Especially since he finished the season and there hasn't been a peep about surgery or some chronic problem.
I wonder what it would cost to dump him? I think Dubas paid a 1st to dump Marleau. |

Marleau's cap hit was exactly double Carter's at $6.25M. Give Anaheim a 2nd and tell Carter it's either SoCal or a stuffy press box in Pittsburgh. |

Cool so he should have no issue collecting the rest of his paychecks from IR if all he cares about is honoring his contract. |

No way of knowing his mindset. What if he tells the world he's healthy? It basically comes down to Dubas having a discussion with him. Could get sticky if he's not amenable to "taking one for the team". He should be because Hextall gave him a contract no other team would have done. Even structured it to make the cap hit stick if he retired. Pretty amazing Hextall did that.

Whether he retires or not doesn't matter. His cap hit stays. Again... Pay him to stay home or get him to accept a trade. Either way, he shouldn't play for a team that desperately needs youth and speed.

But he could be useful bottom six scoring with a smart coach and then you don’t get zero for a 3 million cap hit. |

But is it worth adding value just to trade him? You’re limited on picks and prospects.
The bigger issues are petry and granlund.
Also the reality is the pens don’t have much in the farm that can score 10g in a bottom 6 role either. Dubas will be busy, I think there’s more pressing issues.
Don’t get me wrong hex was stupid for giving him that deal but there are worse deals that hurt the team more. |

The Pens cap situation is actually pretty good. A Granlund buyout gives them 24+ mil. A Carter trade gets them to 27+. Since ownership isn't interested in a rebuild, Dubas should be able to add a much better supporting cast with that kind of space.
I didn't think Petry was all that bad when he was healthy. It was another awful move by Hexy, but he was decent. Should have been given time on the 1st PP. |

I thought we'd been over this a few times and his contract was front loaded by like 500k. So, if he retired the cap hit stays. Perhaps I dreamt this. |
