Rielly had an off season due to an injury and you’re trying to compare it to Karlsson’s hot season. Rielly finally found his game in the post season, that’s what we will be seeing next year and no, Karlsson is not worth $4 million more than that.

I'm not ignoring it. I'm comparing their respective seasons. If you want to compare October 1 - November 21 when Morgan Rielly was injured:

Rielly had played 20 games, was even at 5v5 and had 6 5v5 points and 16 total points;

Karlsson had played 21 games, was +7 at 5v5 and had 19 5v5 points and 29 total points

You're pretending that Karlsson hadn't been fighting with physical injuries most of the past few years himself.

Look if the argument is that Karlsson is a poop defender and we need real defense - I'll agree as long as we can all agree that Morgan Rielly, then, is ALSO a poopty defender.

If the argument is that Rielly is as good as Karlsson offensively, you're ignoring all the evidence presented.

If the argument is that Rielly is a better defender because he throws some weak hits? The defensive numbers don't support the effectiveness of those hits.

And to circle this back to my original point about Karlsson, I said Rielly+ for Karlsson retained - that $4m difference would be a deal breaker.

What about Brodie and money retained?


Brodie had a tough playoff. Leafs do need more production from the back end.

I think we all agree that Toronto plays better team defense than San Jose. Toronto was 7th in goals against and San Jose was 30th. Toronto was 6th in fewest Shots Allowed; San Jose was 23rd. Toronto was 11th in fewest HD Chances Against and San Jose was 20th.

Erik Karlsson played 42% of his team's 5v5 minutes. He had an expected goals against of 2.78.

Morgan Rielly played in 34% of his team's 5v5 minutes when he wasn't injured. He had an expected goals against of 2.8.

So if San Jose is so much worse, why are Rielly's defensive numbers worse?

Anyone with eyes can see that Karlsson is a literal turnstile that is a detriment to his team in the defensive end.

As bad as Rielly can be, he's not in the same universe as Karlsson defensively.

Offensively Karlsson is better but that’s it.

Defensively Rielly isn’t a stud but he’s still notably better than Karlsson

Physically Rielly is waaaaaaaay better (and yes he is physical, google it up and there’s tons of videos of being so)

Cost wise Rielly is 33% better

So Rielly wins 3 of 4 notable items when compared and the one thing Karlsson has him beat on is the one thing the leafs don’t need.
