I agree that it's an academic exercise. Karlsson's 5v5 +/- was even; Rielly's was +1. Both aren't bringing a ton there.

I think we all agree that Toronto plays better team defense than San Jose. Toronto was 7th in goals against and San Jose was 30th. Toronto was 6th in fewest Shots Allowed; San Jose was 23rd. Toronto was 11th in fewest HD Chances Against and San Jose was 20th.

Erik Karlsson played 42% of his team's 5v5 minutes. He had an expected goals against of 2.78.

Morgan Rielly played in 34% of his team's 5v5 minutes when he wasn't injured. He had an expected goals against of 2.8.

So if San Jose is so much worse, why are Rielly's defensive numbers worse?

Philly looking to trade their young stud goaltender to see him flourish elsewhere.

He literally scored more this year than he did the last 3 seasons combined.

Yes and thanks for sharing the additional stats. He’s pure offence, no D strength at all, and he’s up and down production wise. Even if SJ did move him it would be for picks and prospects as well, not someone like Rielly.

I think people struggle to change their mindset on a player.

Karlsson had a 101 point season and refuse to see how valuable he is for it. Dude was healthy for the first time in a while.

And I noticed you disregarded he had 16P in 20GP before he got hurt.

Rielly had an off season due to an injury and you’re trying to compare it to Karlsson’s hot season. Rielly finally found his game in the post season, that’s what we will be seeing next year and no, Karlsson is not worth $4 million more than that.
