He literally JUST put up 101 points. The only defensemen in NHL history to do this are: Orr, Coffey, MacInnis, Leetch and Potvin. Everyone of them is a Hall of Famer.
Morgan Rielly will not be a hall of famer. Will Karlsson be? I don't know, but his potential and credentials are better. He's a much, much, much, much better player than Morgan Rielly is. And pretending that Morgan is suddenly good on D to make an argument is silly. They are both craptacular at defense; you get them for offense. I'll take EK's offense over Rielly's offense 100 times out of 100.
It's moot because it's not going to happen, but as a fantasy trade, I would totally do it! - Monkeypunk
I get Karlsson > Rielly
Rielly isn't waiving just yet.
What was Karlsson +/-.??? He might put up some insane amount points but did he help to keep the puck out his own net more than he scored. |

Wasn't Rielly the Leafs best player in the playoffs though?
I don't think replacing him with Karlsson would be the right move, but that's only my opinion. - Scabeh
He was very easily the Leafs best player, yes. He was finally healthy after getting his knee taken out earlier in the season.
Healthy Rielly is a very good Rielly. |

I love the idea of Woll stepping up. Don't know if I wanna throw him completely to the wolves right away, though. I hope they can get Samsonov to another short term deal and roll both out 50/50. But I don't think Samsonov will want much to do with another short term contract. Think he wants long term stability.
I'd very much like Brodie to get his game back, and I know not having to carry around Holl anymore will help him greatly. But if a guy comes about available, I'd trade Brodie's $5M CAP hit for space.
And I still like Schenn and want him back. - GreatGigInTheSky
don't forget his contract pays him 7.5M for his final year of his contract. |

You can’t blame Holl for Brodie’s play this year since Holl was paired mostly with Gio. Brodie didn’t look all that good with anyone really, just average. I’m worrying that he might just be at the age where the majority of NHLers are done. - Dozzer
Holl played a lot with both Brodie and Gio throughout the season. And both were worn out and broken come playoffs.
It's the Holl curse. Muzzin was his first victim. |

During the 2022-23 NHL season, Karlsson was on the ice for a staggering 126 even-strength goals against
Can talk about how bad SJ was to give up so many goals, but Karlsson was a massive reason for it. |

I think out of all the D Liljregren is the most likely to get traded.
If they bring in a good player via trade. |

Matt Murray's pays 8 million. Easy to pitch Brodie as a bargain if you lead with Murray. |

Ignoring this a vs b for a moment - you need both. You need to have puck movers from the back-end and stoppers on the back end, so I agree. Ideally I agree with you - they could use a real #1 D who is a shut down guy. Most teams move heaven and Earth to keep those guys.
To the comparison of these two specifically? Rielly doesn't throw meaningful hits. He isn't someone _anyone_ is afraid of. He's the type of guy you want to move out in your proposed model anyway because he doesn't understand defense.
EK is older - he's 33 and Rielly is 29. If I were gambling on it, I would bet that Rielly's play depreciates more and faster than EK does - but that's simply based on their pure skill level and the rate of decline on star players.
So I make my decision there based on the overall ledger of knowing both will allow their fair share of opportunities against, but gambling that a guy like EK would put more up in favour. - Monkeypunk
You need to watch Rielly’s game a tad more… he’s far more physical than EK.
EK in 82 games had 33 hits and 90 blocked shots, Rielly had 70 hits and 85 blocked shots in 65 games which was obviously an off season due to that injury. Before he got hurt he had 16P in 20GP, a pace that would have still had him at 65-66P. Imo his more physical approach to an offensive game is worth the 40P that EK has on him especially with a forward group like the leafs have.
Seriously though, that’s how non physical EK is. Even another offensive d man like Rielly more than doubles him.
The leafs need to be tougher back there not fancier. |

HELL NO to that old tired cough up machine! Costs you as much if not more than what he gives you. HARD PASS.
Gibson could be an interesting option, IF can get the Ducks to retain salary. I wouldn't mind that move at all really. Gibson and Woll would be a hell of a tandem there. |

Im going to agree with you here. Karlsson is consistently far worse than Rielly defensively. 101 points and - 26. Loool 🤣
People are bragging up the offense but seem to forget that before this year his last 4 seasons he scored 35, 22, 40 and 45 points... And couldn't play more than 60 games in any of them.
He literally scored more this year than he did the last 3 seasons combined.
11.5 million. Keep him far the (frank) away from Toronto. |

Carter Hart on the move too.
Weird. I wonder what his value is right now. - bryant
Not sure he has a ton of value but young and might just need a change of scenery there too.

No to Gibson...dont need that cap anchor on the leafs.
Ek cap is too high for the leafs, plus they need big physical dmen....not ek imo.
What else you got? |

What about Brodie and money retained?
Brodie had a tough playoff. Leafs do need more production from the back end. |

If Leafs want Konecny I think it’s Lilybust, 1st and mid tier prospect like Hirvonen |

I agree that it's an academic exercise. Karlsson's 5v5 +/- was even; Rielly's was +1. Both aren't bringing a ton there.

Maybe Philly is your spot for Murray.
Big market team that can afford the high salary.
Murray, Peterson great for the tank job but still have the possibility of Murray building his value up for the TDL. |
