Agreed. Very easy nopes to those. - GreatGigInTheSky
I still like the idea of rolling along with Woll in net tbh and as for D they need a top pairing, stay at home, defensive right side guy to line up with Rielly to truly improve the back end. Unless Brodie steps his game back up that is. |

CBJ loading up with more crap for Mike Babcock
Oh wait...Flyers did terrible here. - Santo_44
I saw they acquired Provorov, got LA to retain salary and Philly took on Petersen and Walker but haven't heard more about the parameters of the deal. Some minor league guys included as well, so we'll see which prospects go.
Provorov is underwhelming but he has potential in a good system. Columbus, last year, suffered from pretty significant injuries - losing Werenski and Voracek all season - but they have one of the best prospect farms in hockey. Babock is walking into a decent situation in terms of growth potential. They need a goalie and probably more mobility on D, but if they get back Werenski and get some growth from guys like Johnson, Sillinger and Marchenko they will be significantly better than they were. I think it takes a few years, but they should be a team on the rise.

he's not what the Leafs need on their D IMO! - dmnted
This. Big time. He’s just an older less physical version of Rielly. |

Peterson and Walker to Philly - Santo_44
LA coming out pretty good if they really got Philly to take Peterson off their hands. |

I agree they are a team on the rise...I do think this is an example of a small market team saying "look at me! I am here" with the Babs and Proverov(on pride month ) additions. |

He literally JUST put up 101 points. The only defensemen in NHL history to do this are: Orr, Coffey, MacInnis, Leetch and Potvin. Everyone of them is a Hall of Famer.
Morgan Rielly will not be a hall of famer. Will Karlsson be? I don't know, but his potential and credentials are better. He's a much, much, much, much better player than Morgan Rielly is. And pretending that Morgan is suddenly good on D to make an argument is silly. They are both craptacular at defense; you get them for offense. I'll take EK's offense over Rielly's offense 100 times out of 100.
It's moot because it's not going to happen, but as a fantasy trade, I would totally do it! |

Rielly is younger and more physical. Also more than capable and cheaper.
Why take on a 33 year old? His talent won’t be around much longer.
I prefer Rielly myself at this point, a few years ago I’d be with you on this but not now. |

I love the idea of Woll stepping up. Don't know if I wanna throw him completely to the wolves right away, though. I hope they can get Samsonov to another short term deal and roll both out 50/50. But I don't think Samsonov will want much to do with another short term contract. Think he wants long term stability.
I'd very much like Brodie to get his game back, and I know not having to carry around Holl anymore will help him greatly. But if a guy comes about available, I'd trade Brodie's $5M CAP hit for space.
And I still like Schenn and want him back. |

The leafs don’t need point production on the back end. They need a true blue top notch shut down guy who’s job is to shut down the stars on the opposition. Point production is not the leafs need at all.
Would much rather have Rielly’s game than a purely offensive d man who out scores his forward teammates before worrying about shutting the opposition down. No thanks. |

That kid gets no credit.
21 year old with some talent and potential. No reason to believe he can't be a top 9 forward in this league. |

Wasn't Rielly the Leafs best player in the playoffs though?
I don't think replacing him with Karlsson would be the right move, but that's only my opinion.

Unless they wanna run Copley and some other unnamed goalie. |

You can’t blame Holl for Brodie’s play this year since Holl was paired mostly with Gio. Brodie didn’t look all that good with anyone really, just average. I’m worrying that he might just be at the age where the majority of NHLers are done. |

Rielly-Schenn had second lowest goals against/60 in the playoffs as of a couple of games ago |

Except that he’s massively injury prone. Hoping he gets past it but I wouldn’t bet on that either. |

Ignoring this a vs b for a moment - you need both. You need to have puck movers from the back-end and stoppers on the back end, so I agree. Ideally I agree with you - they could use a real #1 D who is a shut down guy. Most teams move heaven and Earth to keep those guys.
To the comparison of these two specifically? Rielly doesn't throw meaningful hits. He isn't someone _anyone_ is afraid of. He's the type of guy you want to move out in your proposed model anyway because he doesn't understand defense.
EK is older - he's 33 and Rielly is 29. If I were gambling on it, I would bet that Rielly's play depreciates more and faster than EK does - but that's simply based on their pure skill level and the rate of decline on star players.
So I make my decision there based on the overall ledger of knowing both will allow their fair share of opportunities against, but gambling that a guy like EK would put more up in favour.
