I took it as supplementing the core with speed.

Foot speed isn't the only speed. Quick decision making is speed as well.

No one can outskate a pass, so if you're fast on the transition in terms of moving the puck that's another way to be fast.

- j.boyd919

Supplementing some speed is good and I understand quick decisions. I just don't want them thinking they can win just by getting back to their Cup game because they can't win just that way anymore. In fact it's been a complaint of mine and others that Sullivan sometimes still wants to out skate teams with an older core.

The second pairing that could have been of Chychrun-Marino will haunt me to the end of days.

well, I WAS having a good day

at least the whiff on Chychrun in favor of Granlund was enough to finally kick Hextall to the curb.

In 7 seasons Chychrun has played more than 60 games twice and never played more than 70 games in a season. He is a poor mans OEL and you can see how that turned out. I would have been fine with trading a 1st and two 2nds for him I guess but it's not like we missed out on a home run.

Even Marino, I didn't mind him but he wasn't moving the needle at all. We got Ty Smith, who has a way higher ceiling, a 3rd and a few million in cap space. In a bubble, I would absolutely still do that trade.

But yeah, the Granlund move was obviously a complete disaster and as much as I like Petry, if we had Matheson and the extra million in cap space going into this offseason where there are a handful of good 2RD's in free agency, we would have been a bit better off.

A guy I hope Dubas goes for is Ryan O'Reily. Big time player that is predicted to get around $5M/year. That's good value IMO.

If Dubas is willing to be aggressive, he could free up a lot of money. The most interesting thing we've learned so far is that FSG isnt thinking compete than rebuild. They are thinking run this core into the ground and then when they leave, have/acquire the necessary pieces to keep going.

Ryan Poehling was also part of that trade. I think he is being undervalued here. We keep talking about getting faster here. Poehling is the fastest guy on the team, he's also the youngest. Poehling has decent underlying numbers and a good shot. The man has everything we are looking for. He needs to be challenged next season.

"Hours after the hire, the Penguins’ ownership group made more waves. Following Dubas’ media availability, the Penguins cut ties with three employees Hextall had hired. Alec Schall (director of hockey operations and salary cap management), Kerry Huffman (director of pro scouting) and Teena Murray (senior VP, integrated performance) were all fired, said team sources, who spoke under the condition of anonymity. All had at least one more year on their contracts."

Clearing out the last bit of the Hextall mess. Was there a more useless person than Huffman? Pro scout brought us Granlund, Bonino, and Kulikov

- burgh4life87

It is too bad that the Pens can't sue Huffman over the Granlund contract . He probably ended his career as a pro scout by making that move. I suspect that FSG told Dubas, as a condition of his hiring, that his very first move must be to fire Huffman. They are the ones who are going to have to fork over the buyout money, sooner or later.

As of right now I am neutral on Dubas. The "microscope of Toronto" I think distorts player, coach, and GM assessments. Also, it is hard to really know how much influence Shanahan and the ownership had regarding the Tavares deal.

One of the things I am not crazy about is the "interim GM" status. I know it is unavoidable considering the short time frame that makes it difficult to make even one critical hiring much less two. This basically allows Dubas to make mistakes as the interim GM, hire the real GM and move up to President of Hockey Operations, and both he and especially the real GM will be shielded from these mistakes made during this interim period. Dubas can say "well, I wasn't the real GM" and the real GM can say that he wasn't even hired yet.

Ordinarily this would not matter much but how the GM decisions of the next couple months pan out will determine how the last years of the Crosby/Malkin era go. For example, if they can get good, reliable goaltending I think they are back in the playoff picture and can make a run.

This is my concern as well. Sullivan doesn't seem to have a plan B if their "Cup game" isn't working. I think this team might benefit from a new voice behind the bench (along with new teammates) that caters to this team's current strengths and minimizes their weaknesses instead of aspiring to some ideal that just isn't possible anymore.

So if the difference between a rat and a mouse is that a rat is outside and a mouse is inside, if a rat come inside does it become a mouse or is it still a rat that happens to be inside?
- Victoro311

It would still be a rat because that's not what defines a rat or a mouse. Rat is typically used to refer to species in the genus Rattus. Mouse is typically used for species in the genus Mus. Now there are exceptions to this, because common names are dumb, but species will have the common name rat or mouse associated with them, not indiviuals.

Duh.

I want to see a 3rd line of Bertuzzi-Domi-A.Nylander next year.

I'm hoping DOC-Poehling can form good chemistry next season, I think they could be a pesky 4th line.

How is it that dusting a house means cleaning things off, yet dusting a cake means to add stuff on?

Dusting your enemies means completely destroying them. It’s a versatile verb.

Hiring a progressive GM? Politics has infiltrated hockey. Sick to my stomach. Not one single media member held him to account after he said that. Speaks volume. Hockey is in big trouble.

Yes, I'm the stupid one yet the president of the Penguins just said he was looking for a progressive GM. In other words, he's looking for Joe Biden/ Bernie Sanders soldiers. The NHLPA just did the same thing by hiring a self-described communist to run their union.
