I like the hire.

Could of had Chuck Fletcher...

- Glak18

He probably grew up with Habs jammies. Hard pass.

Should have Nashvilled Keefe and hired Brunette.

Also, I've said it before, frequently a GM who helped create a team isn't there for the win when it happens. Leafs could keep a similar recipe to this year and have a different result and Treliving will get all the credit that Shanahan allows him

- Aaron_85

But from a coaching stand point, what has brunette done?
Im honestly not familiar

A new GM should be given the privilege to determine on their own whether the incumbent coach fits the "new" vision.

Vast majority of the time the coach goes.

You'd think the guy that gets outcoached in the playoffs consistently wouldn't have much ground to stand on.

The trade really shocked Huberdeau, probably threw off the whole year.
Think he'll be better this year

- Fakepartofme

Betting that Sutter threw him off his game more than the trade did. Be interesting to see if he bounces back.

Saves on the cap, maybe a job at BP as a "server's assistant" and he gets paid $1500 per hour?

Apparently Tree has already reached out to Matthews camp.
He has a good relationship with his agent

It had everything to do with the leafs paying him. He can’t take pay from the leafs AND another NHL team, he would need permission from the Leafs, at which point they would stop paying him his $6mil a year.
- Bullot

He couldn’t get a job with another team because nobody would hire him. It had nothing to do with him still being under contract.

Holy hell. The sheer amount of pissing and moaning is almost at rediculous levels here. Guy is in. Lets see what he does here. Assess things once we see the roster and after the draft and free agency.

Really its wait and see here giys. Take a valium

- Roadrunner75

Right on. If we were to win the cup in the next 6 out of 7 years, some folks would rag on about the one we didn't. GO LEAFS!!

He made a pretty good trade with Tkachuk considering everyone knew he wanted out of Calgary imo
- Fakepartofme

Agreed considering how behind the 8 ball he was with Johnny Hockey and Tkachuk he did well despite the Flames having a crappy year. He got quality players in that deal when it looked hopeless to get more than pennies on the dollar.

It'll be hilarious to read all the trolls saying no way he can do that in Toronto with any type of a similar situation with any of the big contracts coming up. The Toronto hate is next level - always.

Case in point - look at the backlash on the Leafs losing in the 2nd round to the team on a cinderella run riding the white hot goalie a la the LA Kings when they barely made the playoffs and won the cup in what 2012?

I'm not so sure why there's such a backlash against this guy. Experienced in a Canadian market, seems well liked and respected. Made some big moves when needed.

Let's see what he can do with the Leafs?

- Leaffrog

I'm not sure what to make of him yet. I can offer this . . . here is what Treliving had in the cupboards when he started as the GM of Calgary:

contributing players:
Kris Russell
Ladislav Šmíd
Jiří Hudler
Dennis Wideman
Curtis Glencross
Mark Giordano (C)
Markus Granlund
Matt Stajan
Mikael Backlund
Paul Byron
Sven Baertschi
T.J. Brodie

players with little return value:
Brian McGrattan
Corban Knight
David Jones
Joe Colborne
Joni Ortio
Karri Rämö
Lance Bouma
Max Reinhart
Tyler Wotherspoon

Emerging Prospects:
Sean Monahan
Johnny Gaudreau

Prospects:
Sam Bennett
Mark Jankowski

He arrives in Toronto in better condition by far:

contributing players:

Auston Matthews
John Tavares
Mitch Marner
William Nylander
Calle Jarnkrok
Sam Lafferty
Jake McCabe
Morgan Rielly
TJ Brodie
Mark Giordano
Timothy Liljegren
Conor Timmins

players with little return value:

Matt Murray

Emerging Prospects

Matthew Knies
Joseph Woll

Prospects:

Nick Robertson
Pontus Holmberg
Nick Abruzzese
Ty Voit
Topi Niemela

I think he did a pretty good with Calgary from within drafting Andersson, Kylington, Mangiapane, Tkachuk, Fox and adding Zadorov, Markstrom, Dube, Kadri, Coleman, Lindholm, Huberdeau and Toffolli. Yes the Coleman and Kadri deals will age poorly, but those players are there now. Calgary is a much better team now and this past year can be largely thrown at the feet of Sutter.

Let's see what he can do. We can always hate him retroactively later.

Nah, I don't think we have to pay the "working and living in Calgary" tax.

4x1.3434M. (I think AM34 wants 3 and Leafs will want 5... they meet in the middle)

I'm pretty sure it is. Coaches are usually tied to GM's. And every GM wants his own guy.

I can see Keefe being used as the first domino, if things go wrong at some point.
