Scouts are still scouting. Game tape is easily accessible nowadays for the draft. Ain’t that hard.
UFA negotiations can’t happen until a week before or something like that aside from internal UFAs, in which the Pens shouldn’t be talking to any of them outside Zucker.
These GMs that were interviewed likely already have a plan so it’s not like they’re starting from scratch.
The hold up isn’t that big of a deal. - j.boyd919

Is it that bad of a deal? He is a perennial pt/gm player and the deal expires in a few years. It might be on the high side but he's been a solid player no? - sammy87
It's definitely high. He more or less came out and said that he only wanted to play for his hometown Leafs, and then signed for slightly less than others had offered. The fact that he's making more than Marner and slightly less than Matthews, who were drafted by them, is a failure (to me). Not catastrophic, although that contract is quickly becoming an albatross. |

I know he said it was a dream come true after he signed with them but I don’t recall him saying he only wanted to sign with the leafs before he put pen to paper.

He's only 32 coming off a PPG season and there's only two seasons left on the contract. I dont think its bad enough to call an albatross. Probably a few mill too high but he's still really good and a true top 6 center, one that can also play wing very well, as well.
I'd love to see one of those market value analysis cards for him like Boyd posted for Geno. It showed that Geno's market value, based on a pile of raw production and underlying stats, was 9+ mill but he was only getting 6.1 |

I dont know man, at the time Tavares was the biggest UFA in recent years and one of the best centers in the league. He was a perennial 30/35 goal scorer, close to PPG player or more every season, and great in both ends of ice. The Islanders were offering him the same amount to stay that he received from the Leafs and I believe it was understood quite a few other teams wanted him and were willing to give just as much or more. He had 47 goals for the Leafs in his first season with them. He's had some real sh!tty injury luck since joining them as well. I don't think Tavares is near as bad as people like to say he is, even for his price tag. - MattStrat

hahah You're sour grapes about him not resigning. I would be pissed if it happened with Sid or Geno too.
His career 5 on 5 stats all indicate a solid two way player, except for a few seasons with the Isles. Not to mention a career 57.79% on the FO's. You can bring up this and that, and that you watched him a lot years ago, dont care. |

Weird...On top of watching him a fair bit with TO thinking this I went to NST this morning and he's well above 50% in pretty much all 5 on 5 metrics.

Here is a frightening thought Yes there are only 32 GM's in the NHL You would think these guys would be the best and brightest of men in the industry. I say NO they are not. But one thing we all can agree on is that.......They are very good at spending other peoples money. And I might add they are not very good at doing it wisely!!!!

Well his offensive output negates any lack of defensive performance so he still wins his share of those metrics. If he was just slightly above average defensively I think he’s considered an elite player. |

I am genuinely curious... what is your reasoning for tying all of your hockey posts to politics? Like.. what are you trying to achieve? Is there a goal in mind?
Do you do this in person in real life? Do you do this with all subjects, or just hockey? "This coffee is so bitter, like the government raising my taxes bitter."

I am genuinely curious to why he makes those comparisons though. Like.. what is the goal? Does he think people really give a poop? Does he do it in real life?

Yeah I thought the same thing though. I will say he’s the only point per game player I can remember watching and not noticing the entire game. He’s definitely slightly overpaid but it’s definitely not what’s preventing Toronto from taking the next step. |

yeah thats a good call about not noticing him in a game hahaha...but to me that usually indicates someone not bad defensively, as being noticed badly defensively usually sticks out.... though I tend to think thats more so for defenders in general haha

It kind of looks that way hahaha....Ive obviously watched Geno a lot more than JT but I do find Geno sticks out bad defensively at least once or twice a lot of games the past 3 or 4 seasons.
