Burke was an unmitigated disaster. He was given full reins from MLSE to do whatever he wanted and the good will of fans who were ready for a complete rebuild.
What did he do? He said he didn't believe in complete teardowns and tried to fast track success. The result? Not a single playoff appearance in the 5 years he was with the club.
He's not even in the same conversation as Dubas in terms of Leafs success. - mjones242
some serious recency bias.
Dubas was the GM starting in 2018, but he was around before AM and MM were even leafs.

This will not come as a huge surprise to many, but hearing Washington is closing in on Spencer Carbery as its next head coach.

He rode Bryan Murray’s coattails to a cup win… wrecked the Ducks with the Kunitz and Andy Mac deals - and rode that to a job with the Leafs - and single-handedly help rebuild the Ducks with Gibson & Rakell trade - dozerD10
He gets praise for bringing in Scott Niedermayer but that deal never happens if Rob isn't already there.
Also, the Pronger trade - but that one seemed gift wrapped as well. I'm sure you have all of the juicy details of that one!
(side note: apparently, the Leafs were close to acquiring CP too but JFJ wouldn't swap Stajan for Steen in the deal... ugh)

Burke acheived zero but did a better job - senstroll
I'll agree that the only significant roster player Dubas acquired during his tenure was Snakevares - which hasn't quite worked out as well as we had hoped. AM34, MM, and Willie were not Dubas pickups.
But how do you figure Burke, who you admit "achieved zero", did a better job?

How as it not worked out?
40 goal scorer
Pretty much ppg
The problem with Tavares isn't his production or his play.
It's the fact having a third 10M+ contract on the team makes it difficult to build a complete team. - Scabeh
its been discussed to death...but I think if the Cap rises at a normal pace instead of the flat covid thing...its not so much an issue, but it it what it is ...leafs got unlucky with the timing of signing the contracts

It's this. The team had Matthews and Marner who were going to be commanding huge raises. They went and got Tavares, who was a luxury they couldn't afford, and arguably didn't need, and his arrival at that salary changed he salary demands for both Matthews and Marner.
If the Leafs don't sign JT, Matthews probably comes in at $10.5m and Marner at $9.5m. They would probably have had about $13m additional to plug the defense, find a suitable second line centre and add some peripheral scoring - or pay for a star goalie. The options would have been significantly better.
I'd argue that if you got a $6m centre to play 2C, maybe he doesn't score 40 and get 80 points - maybe he scores 35 and gets 70 points. But what does the other $7m get you around him?

Is a "pretty much ppg" player worth 11M? He did score 47 goals once with Marner on his wing, but has only eclipsed 30 goals one other time (this past season) since he signed.
Don't get me wrong, Snake gets that contract from any number of teams but with the cap ceiling being frozen, it hasn't worked out as well as one would have hoped.

It has. I still think with 3.5% - 4% cap growth year-over-year, they handcuffed themselves quite a bit for the first couple years of those deals.
In 2019 the cap fell about $1m shy of projected growth. In 2020 that cumulatively was $4.5m. By 2021 it was $7.9m. By this past season, it was $10.5m short of what we would have projected back in 2018 when these deals were signed.
So it hurts the edges for sure, but the difference in those 5 years is still less than what JT cost initially.
