If you think every GM gets their deals shot down and told to make other deals, you're an idiot. You think the older GMs who've been in this league for decades would tolerate that for a second?
For the average GM, stamp of approval is just that. It's a signature saying I've vetted my GMs work and he's not making any poor financial decisions.
Not only is that level of micromanagement unique to Toronto, the guy doing it hasnt spent a day as a GM.
Shanahan hired a coach before he had a GM, he's still paying that coach and is now looking for his third GM. He's a moron. - joel878
Its not unique, if true.
And you have no basis to call him a moron, honestly.
Also, the first gm was interim, only hired for a short while...everyone knew that |

Miss what and why?
Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen people moan over losing a GM like I have with this fanbase.
If this guy had orchestrated a perennial deep run playoff team, I'd get it. We won a single 2nd round game during his tenure.
I liked him as a person, he made some good moves, he made some poor moves... time for fresh blood. Let's go!!!! |

Dubas and Shanny have a horrible playoffs record with the Leafs, don't understand the fascination with either of them. |

the last 3 seasons the team averaged 113 points. yes only 1 playoff round win, but a team that contends is better than the decade of poop that happened before Shanny.
for me, its all about who they chose to replace him. and so far, the names Iv seen have been Meh...to total poop

Considering the material both had to work with, Burkie did x10 better than Dubas.
Dubas has been the biggest failure in Leafs GM history, and that was difficult to achieve. |

"He’ll be hiring his third general manager in less than 10 years. He pivoted to Dubas from Lou Lamoriello after three seasons and has now decided to replace Dubas after five. He wears the Leafs’ ultimate failings more than anyone.
It was Shanahan who decided to hire a coach – Mike Babcock – before he had a GM. It was Shanahan who brought in Mark Hunter to run the draft for the Leafs (which backfired). It was Shanahan who had Hunter and Dubas running the Leafs together when the Leafs still hadn’t hired that GM (Lamoriello).
It was Shanahan who purged the entire front office after the 2014-15 season.
It was Shanahan who plucked Dubas from Sault Ste. Marie. It was Shanahan overseeing the Leafs when he and Dubas sat together on a summer day in 2018 to announce the signing of John Tavares. It was Shanahan in charge when the Leafs lost in the first round in the two seasons before Dubas took over and the four that followed after that.
It was Shanahan who changed the direction of the Leafs when he promoted Dubas to GM. It’s Shanahan now leading the Leafs back into the unknown."
I have all the basis anyone could ever need to call Shanahan a moron. |

Neither of them play in the playoffs.
Dubas has more control over the results, coaching, player movement etc.
I feel like coaching and once again matthews and marner no showing in elimination games lost the 2nd round for them.
But not many other gms would trade either of those two over the past two years had they been in dubas position.
I feel the biggest issue was overpaying both, matthews and marner never had made over 10m per, specially on a 5 year deal....and neither should get a raise on what they currently make.
We'll see on the new gm handles that |

Burke was an unmitigated disaster. He was given full reins from MLSE to do whatever he wanted and the good will of fans who were ready for a complete rebuild.
What did he do? He said he didn't believe in complete teardowns and tried to fast track success. The result? Not a single playoff appearance in the 5 years he was with the club.
He's not even in the same conversation as Dubas in terms of Leafs success. |

Thank you for helping to prove my point. None of that suggest or proves that Shanny is a moron.
Lou was interim, he wasnt staying long, just long enough to help clean up and then a fresh pov was going to be brought in. Dubas was a young up and coming GM, it was a risk but it wasnt a moronic move to sign him.
Babcock was highly regarded as a coach and was hailed as exactly what the leafs needed at that time....by everyone! He got the leafs to over 100pts in a reg a season. After a few years, things changed and they had to move on from him and they did. Nothing moronic about that.
Hunter, well I wasnt a big fan of his either, but he had a good rep around the hockey community.
Signing Tavares was the biggest FA get for the leafs or any team really. A young superstar in his prime, sure he was overpaid, but he was paid less than what others were offering and had covid not occurred (not Shanny's fault either) and the cap continued to rise, the contract wouldnt have been so bad in year 6 and 7. Definitely not a moronic move.
By all accounts, Dubas tried to play Shanny and the leafs, Shanny wasnt gonna play so he moved on. Not a moronic move.
Now, if he hires Chia or Bergevin as the new GM, in my opinion, that would be a moronic move. But again, that would only be my immediate opinion, who knows what the results would be in that alternate timeline.
Im not a huge Shanny supporter, but nothing you've said suggest he is a moron. |

No, I have not even looked at the cap numbers to see if any of it works
Dumba will cost too much.

Agreed.
And the kessel deal backfired, although Kessel was great, the team simply didnt have enough talent around him to allow for that trade to have had success. |

Auston Matthews who is just 25 has a Calder, 2 Rocket Richards, has been a first and second team all-star, has a Hart and a Lindsay who is presently making 14.64% of the cap? That guy?
He'll get a raise. McDavid is at 16.7%, MacKinnon is at 15.3% - both contracts are expiring, but Kane & Toews were at 15.22%. Matthews, when healthy, is in the MacKinnon space in terms of contract. I figure if he goes 8 years (which I highly doubt), it's for around 15.5% which would put him around $13m; if he goes shorter term because he's looking to maximize his earnings as the cap raises, then maybe the cap percentage can be a bit lower.
