Sorry, I should have qualified that:
I wonder if his offensive stats would be Art Ross-able. - mjones242
If we traded Marner and his destination team had 2 other legitimate first line players, he would absolutely rip the league apart. Look right now he put up 99 points (arguably 100 since that kick of the puck wouldn't have been possession enough to stop play on a delayed penalty call) and everyone knows Marner is the puck carrier to enter the zone and he's looking for Matthews. Bunting? (frank) that guy. Who cares! Marner isn't looking for Bunting.
But if he had a left winger and centre who were both legitimately good and threats to score or make good give'n'go plays . . . . that's the insulation Marner would need to truly succeed. As it is you can almost throw three guys at the two and overwhelm them. I mean Bunting wasn't a stump on skates, and he creates his fair share of chaos and Marner and Matthews use the points very well, so I'm simplifying, but imagine if Marner had two threats he could distribute the puck to instead of one?

As the process to find next #LeafsForever GM gets moving, I'd expect Toronto to interview at a minimum Jason Botterill, Marc Bergevin, Brad Treliving and Peter Chiarelli - if they haven't already.
Four names to chew on in TO.

Marner's played on very good lines before, and besides, it's rare for a team to stack a line for long periods of time, outside of maybe Bergeron/Pasta/Marchand. |

Sounds like JT and Knies are both top6 LW's next year. Not really the model PF but few better then JT at snagging garbage at the net front. |

Sure. Noting that as gravy said as well - Marner has had two good players with him before, but players grow and mature and get better as well.
Marner is an excellent player. I don't really want him to go anywhere. I don't want Nylander or Matthews to go either. The ideal choice for me is JT - but only because he's desperately overpaid - and that's not going to happen. Frankly I don't think the Leafs have done enough to insulate him in the playoffs.
This isn't to suggest that he isn't a stellar player on his own, but when the playoffs come and you can grab guys, hold guys and haul guys down with a significant amount of impunity, the smaller guys in the league suffer. It's why Chicago put Kane with 2 200lb players (he put up most of his points on the PP, but at 5v5 he was successful with a mixture of Saad, Richards, Toews and Bickell (215, 200, 200 and 225lbs, respectively). Kane is a future hall of fame player and is often compared to Marner - but similarly in the playoffs some insulation for the smaller guys is necessary to create that space they need to be elite.
The new guy has a lot of figuring to do, I'll say that.
