Hard pass on trading the leading point producer.

Trade Nylander instead. Dump Tavares on Buffalo. 19 million cleared.

- Rare_Jewel

Nylander produces in the playoffs; 40 goal scorer on a bargain contract.

Do you think it's realistic that Tavares would consent to be traded to Buffalo?
- Zezel

Yes. Close to Oakville. His uncle is a legend in Buffalo.

New management, new direction.

He got his dream. It didn't work out. Time to move on.

If he really loves the Leafs, he'll help them and go away.

Tavares will never waive his NMC.

I like Marner but this team has greater needs than an elite, playmaking winger who is soaking up 11M.

Marner leading playoff point producer the past 8 years. Selke type penalty killer.

Nylander gets the benefit of never playing defense, never killing penalties and getting softer match-ups.

I'd keep him too but if you want Dubois and Hellebuyck, it's Nylander who goes.

Would you relocate to Buffalo because you love the Leafs, a relative was a legend there, and it's close to Oakville? I'm not convinced of the realism here.

Marner, Samsonov (signed) for PLB and Helly and a 1st.
- gravyface

Unless it something that literally is stealing from another team, I’m starting to think they die on this sword of the core.

Unless there is a clear win or even fair value this just seems like a loss for the leafs. You just hope to god they figure it out in playoffs.

The reality is, you need elite goaltending to vastly improve your chances of going deep in the playoffs. We haven't had that since Eddie the Eagle, and Cujo before that.

Helly's the best option at a clear-cut upgrade, but I don't think he goes without a package deal.

He doesn't have to relocate, he can drive from Oakville. It's not that far. Probably quicker, less traffic.

It's only 2 years left.

If the team tells him time is up, he accepts it and moves on.

But Shanahan is an idiot who is hellbent wasting cap space and losing.

I'm down with Marner to WPG for Helly and other pieces.

Commuting to Buffalo from Oakville is really not a strong case for this in my view. My skepticism has actually increased.

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed captain Kyle Okposo to a one-year, $2.5 million contract, the team announced Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:

Last season, Okposo scored 11 goals and 28 points in 75 games while averaging 14:40 of ice time per game.

If a 35 yr old stiff like this is garnering a contract like this.. well you can see the FA market is going to be nuts for guys like ROR and such.

Then your skepticism of actually winning a Stanley Cup with that contract on the books should be sky high instead of sky blue.

From last blog:

We lost because of one word: Bobrovsky.

Certainly reliable goaltending at critical times came back to bite them in the backside again. Frankly if we want to hold Dubas accountable for anything, it's sort of that. Andersen had lost his confidence here - most of us knew he'd be fine in Carolina - and Campbell was a longshot to be the next Tim Thomas; Samsonov and Murray were always a HUGE roll of the dice and Murray's selling point was his playoff experience, but when the opportunity arose, they gave it to Woll - so why was Murray even here?

But really their downfall was that Bobrovsky has been otherworldly. They were in tight in the dirty areas. They played in front of him and around him and deflected pucks and got rebounds. Not as many as Tampa because Florida plays much dirtier around their net and in the playoffs that's "good defense" . . sometimes . . if the refs decide you're allowed to. Outside of a few stretches in a few games for the most part Florida has been outplayed all playoffs. Boston was better in 5 games, Toronto was better in 3 (or 4 depending on the metric). Carolina has been the better team in all 3 - although I will say that Florida was better through the last 3 OT periods of game 1. Florida didn't score their goals by crashing the net and being stronger. Half of their shots were just that - shots - that would not have beaten Bob.

So Boston, Toronto and Carolina are all getting goalied. Boston was ahead 2-1 in the series when Bob came in - and granted he got bombed in his first game, but then he found his footing and here we are.

People female dog that Toronto was too soft or Carolina is too soft. Was Boston? How much do you need to blow it up and how much do you need to tweak some things and get a better goalie. What Bob is doing is generational this year; you won't see it for another 10-20 years.
- Monkeypunk

And this is why I'm so opposed to throwing huge dollars to get an 'elite' goalie - because Bob's performance is lighting in a bottle. I mean hard to say that the Leafs would have won this year vs Florida with Helly or Saros in net vs Sammy and Woll isnt' it? Boston had elite goaltending all year and lost to Bob. Freddy has been lights out vs Florida and they are about to lose.

I don't think you can have "elite" goaltending, offense AND D in a cap era without one (or 2) of those 3 pieces is players playing way beyond their cap hit due to Entry Level deals or lightning in a bottle.

I feel like good goaltending is enough and you need a good balance of elite of F and D with the POS players sprinkled around the line up to make space for the elite talent.

The Leafs spending a bunch of money on an elite goalie just doesn't feel like it makes the difference to me if they can get a really good tandem with Woll as the back half of it in place.

And your bang on - Florida could very easily have lost in the 1st 2 rounds - they aren't this world beater, their goalie is right now for sure but even the great Jesus Price on a heater couldn't win the cup alone.

Vegas in 5.

It pains me to think either the Vegas or Florida fanbase will get a cup but my dislike for the Panthers > Vegas.

Freddie Andersen has a 1.58 GAA and an .937 sv% in the playoffs this year and we're still LOSING ffs

So do they come out with - the new GM wants to see how this core does with a new coach and tweaks before making moves at the TDL say...

I could see that scenario play if they can't find deals they like this offseason.

Marner is elite defensively, kills penalties and everybody seems to forget about it.

Tavares must waive his NMC. It's not an option. His time is up and the new GM must him convince him to move on.

Tavares isn't going anywhere.

It's Marner or Nylander. One of them has one of the best value contracts in the NHL.

Well, because it's in the Conference Finals the math works differently: 2 games equals close to infinite. Or something.

I was just thinking that... or hey Bennett was cool but this ... this has to be punished.
