To be far.. I think this was more about the the players hating the coach in Calgary this year - Azuredoom
I’m on the fence about Treliving. I live in Alberta so we’ve had lots of Flames and Oilers exposure and am fairly familiar with Treliving. The Tkachuk trade really had him handcuffed. A star player essentially says publicly that he is not signing back with the Flames……and now what does the GM do!? He managed to get a couple of good players for someone who was not coming back and had one season left on his contract. Tough spot to be in. Calgary will be a better team with Sutter gone….his schtick has a short shelf life and he was way past his expiry date in Calgary. What’s worse than what Treliving got for Tkachuk is what the Leafs will get for Matthews when he walks next summer!! Nothing!

Blueprint for success is as follows, armchair GM mode:
Shanahan: Fired
President: George McPhee
GM: Dale Tallon
Head coach: Joel Quenneville
Tavares: Ask to waive NMC. Trade to BUF for Casey Mittelstadt.
Nylander: Trade with whatever else to WPG for Hellebuyck and Dubois.
Murray: Trade to WPG or somewhere else. Buy-out if you have to.
Jarnkrok: Trade to WPG
Brodie: Trade for picks and/or prospects
McCabe: Trade for picks and/or prospects
O'Reilly: Keep @ 3 <--- Hometown discount
Acciari: Keep @ 2
Matthews: Extend @ 12.5 AAV. New Captain.
Dubois: Extend @ 7.5 AAV
Hellebuyck: Extend @ 8 AAV
Domi: Sign @ 3.5 <--- Hometown discount
Donato: Sign @ 2.5
Perry: Sign @ 1.5 <--- Hometown discount
Monahan: Sign @ 1 <--- Hometown discount
Schenn: Keep @ 1.5 <--- Hometown discount
Dumoulin: Sign @ 4.5 <--- 6'4" 207
Mayfield: Sign @ 5.5 <--- 6'5" 220
Gavrikov: Sign @ 5.5 <--- 6'3" 220
Domi / Matthews / Marner
Mittelstadt / Dubois / Monahan
Knies / O'Reilly / Perry

Rielly / Mayfield
Gavrikov / Schenn
Dumoulin / Liljegren
Giordano

Assuming cap is between 84-85 million. Cap hit 81.5. Cap space 3.45.
You keep your #1 goal scorer. You keep your #1 point producer.
You add better coaching, better cycle, better grit, better character, better defense, better PK, better goaltending.
That's how you contend and with a bit of luck, win Cups. - Rare_Jewel

Timo Meier and Willie should be pretty comparable on new deals, yah?
Curious to see what Timo gets.
RoR 2C and Haula 3C?
Severson RD?
You look at B'Hawks roster and gotta think Jones and Murphy would want to get the hell out of there. Hmmm... |

To be fair Schenn's hometown discount is more than he makes now by over 50%. |

Timo is likely to sign his on the open market, that's bound to inflate it a bit. |

Yes but I think they're reasonable.
O'Reilly and Schenn were already involved this year and previously. O'Reilly had the worst statistical season of his career and might just give the Leafs a one year discount to prove himself again. Schenn has been a discount player for years now already.
Monahan is from Brampton, barely played last year, could be okay with a one year "show me" deal.
Perry might be tough to scoop away from Tampa Bay but he's been there for a couple years and maybe he's ready to give his home town team a chance. He's already been playing at a discount the last 3 years, don't think it's a stretch he does it for the Leafs.
Max Domi will play for the Leafs, it's literally only a matter of time. That time might be now if he thinks he can get top-six time. |

Might be the perfect guy to deal with Matthews and/or Nylander when they refuse to re-sign to a reasonable extension.
But would rather have him as an assistant and bring in Dale Tallon. |

Sounds good but you’re getting outbid for 6 or 7 of those cats - dozerD10
Maybe but usually the outbidding goes towards the players who score more points. Guys who barely put up points usually get less bids.
For example, Gustafsson got 40+ points last year. Or Klingberg. Those are the guys who teams break the bank for. The defensive D usually settle for between 4-6 because at the end of the day, without the point totals, there's usually less money for them on the table like Brodie. |

My bad I didn't realize he was restricted this summer. Arbitration eligible with a 10 million QO. That's an interesting one... |

Wait. Didn't nobody break the bank for those two guys last year?
Klingberg took a one year deal late cause he couldn't cash in. Gustafsson was on a one year deal for 800k.
Wtf are you talking about. What am I missing. |

When Gustafsson scored 60 points then 26 points (43 average over 2 years), he got 3 million as an UFA from the Flyers.
When he scored 18 points he got 800K. Now he's back over 40 points so he's more likely to get paid bigger because guys who score points get more money.
Klingberg scored 47 points and got 7 million AAV.
Defensively minded defenders scoring 20-30 points get less money on average. Gavrikov, Mayfield and Dumoulin all scored 25 or less points. So assuming their price range would be in the 4-5.5 AAV range would be reasonable. Just like Brodie and Muzzin signed for not long ago.
Very simple concept. |

Klingberg could only get that AAV for one year. He literally couldn't get paid and had to accept a one year deal.
Your theory makes no sense. You're saying 47 points is worth 7 million but 43 is worth 3 million, and 25-30 is worth 4.5-5.
How's that theory working out with Trouba, Myers, Seth Jones, Nurse, Vlasic, Ekholm, Sanheim...
Hampus Lindholm just had more than 40 points for the first time in his career and is in the first year of an 8 year 52 million dollar deal.
The more you talk the more it's clear you have no idea what you're talking about. |

It was savage but also it looked to me like a horizontal version of Sam Bennett on Bunting, which was good for a minor penalty and a fine. |

Treliving absolutely sucks. I cant believe he is even being considered. Take a look at this trade history https://www.capfriendly.c...ades/staff/brad-treliving
What trade on there did he win? They are all mid to bad trades. People on here who hated Dubas will be wishing for him back if we get Treliving in the end.

Its not just a boring hire, its an awful one. Fireable from Shannahan. I wouldnt even interview him. Surprised he is even a candidate.
I dont like any of the GMs out there to be honest. Id try for the below
First calls
Armstrong - Likely not available
McPhee - Likely wouldnt want it
Second Call
Tulsky
If none of those, juust keep Pridham, and hire some senior guys to help him. Dont know what else is out there that would be good.
