Superstars dont usually do that. Toronto probably got in trouble the day they gave that deal to Tavares. Salary structure is really important with the cap and you can screw that up in a bad way.

It's only a "paycut" because he signed long term with a now illegal deal before they stopped the long term deals. It's not the same or even close. Let alone the joke that he signed for his jersey number as a vanity thing which was the second highest cap after OV.

No he couldn't. He signed one huge ass deal before they stopped it being legal. His original 8.7 was 17% of the cap, way higher than McDavid. His second huge one was 14.5 still only lower than Malkin and OV at the time. Things can age well, but people need to know it was not a "bargain."

He couldn't have known the lockout would go well and the cap would go up and nobody could sign over 8 years. poop happens. We have guys like Pasta who signed for 6.6 and was a 40 goal guy for 4 years, or MacK who signed for peanuts and was a Hart candidate in a few, or Tavares who made 5.5 while being a PPG guy the whole time. Sometimes you can get lucky in deals. I'm just saying that looking at old contracts and ignoring their actual historical context which is easily available on CapFriendly is stupid. Cap % is the only thing we can use to prove who got a good or bad deal.

I think it's nice to be correct. The only thing we can go on is cap%. So he never took a pay cut on paper either. He took the superstar rate. All of them get between and have gotten regardless of deal between 14.5-18% of the cap on their first year. The nice thing about 12 year deals is that you're either in Russia or looking like a steal 10 years in.
