so I read a few 'experts' on different sites...
not too many thinking Habs should pick Michkov. too risky, too complicated.
so if they are right, and I believe they are, why would it be any different for CLB and SJ?

those experts might not have the same contacts and information in Russia, the kid can't even talk publicly about playing in North America because his team will shorten his ice time and he'll barely play

good thing no one here is in charge, making decisions when you don't really know poop isn't a recipe for success.

well, that may not be the greatest example lol, but there are certainly many people who believe Michkov is the kind of talent that is worth the "complications". if MTL grabs him he'd join the habs in 2026, he'd be 21 years old and ready to play. I'm not saying they absolutely should draft him, but I think it would be silly to just brush it off without looking into it.

people make a big thing about 2026....well even if you draft Smith or Dvorsky, you won't see the player playing for the Habs for 2 years most likely. We are really talking about 1 year difference.

The real question is, are they confident he won't sign another deal in Russia for lots of money from SKA? Kuznetsov did that before coming to the NHL, he was signed when he got drafted...and at the end of that deal he signed for another 2yrs. Showed up in Washington at 23 or 24 I think

I guess that's why they need to look into it, because it certainly isn't something that will be discussed publicly. if he's still available at 5th and the habs are confident he'd join the team after his current contract then perhaps they should draft him, given that he's the most talented player available.

didn't sign his NHL deal until March 2014, joined them after the KHL season, played 17 games for the Caps that year at the end of the season.

so 4 years after he was drafted.

Big difference is Michkov current deal has 3yrs left, Kuz had 2 years left when drafted then signed another 2yrs.

Also...Traktor, the team Kuz was playing for paid him US3.8M for the last 2 years in Russia, more than a rookie contract back then.

Michkov plays for SKA, one of the richest teams in the KHL, they can afford to pay him more money and hookers then he will get in the NHL. Question is...is Michkov all about money? If he is coming to the NHL, he has to sign an entry level deal.

Ivan Miroshnichenko (drafted in the first round by the caps) managed to end his contract in Russia and is coming to NA next season.

Of course Habs need to do their homework on what Michkov wants and what's possible but I still think it's an overblown issue. If he wants to play in the NHL, he will.

yup, that's still a question we don't have the answer to, and that the habs need to find out. of course there's a good chance that he drops a few ranks and the habs pass on him as well if they don't feel good about the whole thing, but if they like what they hear and they do draft him it might just be the kind of decision that habs fans will eventually be very happy about when he joins the team and they see him play.
