The Blackhawks didn't give up any 1st round draft picks though, defense entering their prime, signed Hossa in FA. Kane and Toews were the youngest players on the team still on ELCs, so you had a bunch of 23 to 27 yo players, all that talent, we were stacked

When we traded all those players away, Kane and Toews were 24 years old when we had that incredible 3 year run.

I just think when you have a young team you have the advantage of signing and paying guys on ELCs why rush to the Cap

So what's the contradiction?

Maybe it just got lost in translation

They traded a former #3 overall Barker for Johnsson and a still unknown Leddy.

NJ still has a number of good prospects waiting to come up that they don’t have room for at the moment.

Rhe contradiction was you having different arguments on pursuing Meier for teams that are in very similar situations (CAR and NJ).

For Carolina Hurricane both Svechnikov and Teravainen out for series, correct.,,,,too bad as I really wanted to see them,,,.anyway there is a large group of forwards interesting to see their effectiveness/Puljarvi has another life here like Morris the cat seemingly eh! Two more forwards I appreciate watching J Staal and Kotkaniemi contribute

That Rockford game is tonight I had said it was slated yesterday

Surely the draft lottery will be on a few major networks and more The SCORE app, ESPN coverage + hockey games, TSN.CA/NHL should cover it on free app although u can upgrade app cheaply on month or annual basis. Probably 7pm anyone know for sure is it 7pm CST

So the Blackhawks traded a 1st for a 1st, that's a reach compared to what the Devils did.

I see where the contradiction comes from, it's you, you think Carolina and NJ are the same because they ended up with the same record.

I know you think age is arbitrary how about playoff experience? Hurricanes have been in the playoffs 5 years in a row? NJ first year in the past 5 years is not the same to me. To me there was no rush to make this move for NJ, they had planted the seeds of the team and its early spring for them, where as Carolina is late spring early summer and its time for them to make some moves to help there core.

One good season by the Devils has everyone convinced they will be a playoff team for years to come, we'll see

I know that i make this argument now, one of these teams will win the SC. If they do kudos to them but to reiterate i do not see both these clubs as the same team, almost same record is not the same team to me in my eyes.

If capfriendly is right that the salary cap will go up about $9- $10 mil in the next 3 years, that will give NJ a lot more flexibility but i don't trust the NHL and their inflated estimates.

Well obviously Fitzgerald disagrees with you and believes his team was ready to make the next step, just as Blake disagrees with you about the Kings taking the next step. My guess is that Fitzgerald evaluated his roster/prospects, and he saw no Timo Meier comparable in his system, and he believed his team needed a top 6 power forward to take that next step, and if he waited for the next step when the exact right moment on a timeline based on players on the teams age, then no Timo Meier or comparable would be available.

Detroit took a Russian last year as I recall?
- rpeters01

Not early, but 52nd overall they took left winger Dmitri Buchelnikov 52nd overall last year but took C Marco Kasper (who that already had a look-see in the bigs this season) and LW Dylan James the pick after the Hawks took Ludzinski...

Is the 'cat on the move because he told Ottawa he is going elsewhere and won't re-up?
From Spector's hockey rumors:
MLIVE.COM: In a recent mailbag segment, Ansar Khan was asked if the Detroit Red Wings would take a run at acquiring Alex DeBrincat if the Ottawa Senators were to shop the RFA winger.
Khan believes they have to assets to do it if the Senators are willing to trade DeBrincat within the division. However, he wondered if the 5’7”, 165-pounder is the type of scorer they want when they seeking more pushback and being harder to play against. He also noted it would cost $$9 million to qualify DeBrincat’s rights.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With over $30 million in cap space, five picks in the first two rounds of this year’s draft and a deep pool of prospects, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has the trade capital to make a significant addition or two to his roster for next season.
DeBrincat would address their need for more scoring but they’d have to look elsewhere to add more size and toughness to their roster. As for the Jets, they could shake things up this summer but Connor is under a long-term contract and I doubt he’ll be part of any changes they make.

It is starting to look like I am a closeted wings fan:
DETROIT HOCKEY NOW: Kevin Allen recently reported the Red Wings will look for a goalie in this summer’s thin free-agent market. They’ll also shop for a right-shot defenseman.
Wings top prospect 6' 6" Simon Edvinsson was called up and I was watching and on one of his shifts he was checked and hurt the shoulder, continued playing in pain, but is now out until at least the late Fall.
You have to wonder if this shoulder issue stays with him, surgery or not.
(now that I found out they have 2 selections sandwiched around our first and Tampa's I am thinking dark thoughts...
I am fairly certain the only sent Filip Hronek to Canucks because they were making room for Simon Edvinsson and freeing up the 4.4 Cap space Honeks hit for another season. (this IS what the draft is supposed top do.

Don't blame Toronto their best players are currently in their prime, 25, 25, 27, 29, Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly, they cant wait anymore

Avs, 23, 25, 26, 29

Hughes is only 21, i would of waited till about 24, then Hirscheier would be 27, goalie would be 25, that 1st round pick you'd draft this year would be 21 by then and have a chance to help, Mercer 21 would be 24, to me i think this Meier move is going to eventually make you pick and choose who you keep in 3 years.

- BetweenTheDots

Dots, some players have speed/skating, size, skill, grit/compete, can and have scored over 30 goals 3 times at 26 yrs old and a rare handful have all of those skills and even more rare is they become available when they are 26 yrs old. That's Timo Meir.

NJ put up the 3rd most pts in the league, were on the smallish side at forward and Meir becomes available and isn't going to be a rental and you want them to pass on this rare power player? A team obviously ready to win now and for the next 5-6 yrs?

I know you ain't diggin Meir and that's fine. You're free to have any opinion and free to excercise your right to be wrong too. Meir is a perfect fit for NJ.

I think Buffalo did the right thing by not buying at the deadline. Hey had Levi come in, they didn’t need more useless goalies like Comrie and Anderson. They needed D, but knew this wasn’t their year. Now they have even more talent coming up through the system, plus a solid pick in a great draft. They lost zero home grown talent. Savoie looks like he’ll be a difference maker, as does Kulich. Players like this allow them to move guys like Olofsson who are one dimensional Kubalik like players.

Their cap will get crunchy sooner than expected, but as Okposo comes off and Skinner’s deal nears its end it’ll become more manageable. Need to get Dahlin and Power some big time term before they get any better.

I'm really curious to see what happens in Ottawa with Cat.

And see if Snoop Dog or/ and Ryan Reynolds are the new owners

- BetweenTheDots

Dcat is a goal scorer and plays a decent 200 ft game. He'll get his money somewhere... And yea, OTT is a feel good story. Full of skilled young players and the enthusiasm of a new ownership group coming in.

My guess is if Dcat wanted to be a Senator for the next 8 yrs he would have signed already. Maybe the new ownership will blow him away with an offer, we'll soon see.

Fitzgerald has a slew of RFA's and UFA's to work through, too. As it stands, they have about $35 mill of cap space to spend on 11 spots for next year. We'll see what Meier's next deal is worth. And how many prospects are ready to make the jump next season.

Back to Meier, I am guessing they give him a max deal for about $8-9 mill per. Power forwards who score 40 goals don't grow on trees, and they are just about at the window, if not already. And the cost is a late first, plus a second that could become a first if they make the conference finals? This is the time. What was probably not the time was when Ottawa gave up the early first for Debrincat. Or Montreal gambling on Dach.
