I thought Mayfield and Aho were very good last night.
Pulock who I thought had a shat year has been the best dman for us then Pelech. Dobson has been an absolute abortion especially last night.

Love various craft beers but have come to appreciate good cocktails and liquors more over the years. I like vodka-based but see little reason to go too high end on it.
We have probably have a dozen different tequilas. Just bought some Clase Azul Gold which is amazing. Also have become a mezcal fan.
For bourbon I have yet to go too high end. More like Buffalo Trace and Jefferson Reserve at this point.

I'm open to suggestions on favorite brands.

If you're buying, I'll take a Pappy Van Winkle. But a good, reasonably priced brand is Elijah Craig.

Agree, although I don't think Pelech has been as consistently good since his return from the IR. I say this, being a fan of Pelech. He has been the best overall Isles' d-man for the past 4 or 5 years.

A good low priced bourbon is Maker’s Mark. I like wheated bourbon like Pappy Van Winkle and Weller 12 but they are too expensive. Maker’s Mark and Larceny are good and not expensive.

A good (but a little expensive) bourbon for old fashioned is Booker’s. It’s high proof (120+), so it can sneak up on you.

Yeah, I've done Makers plenty of times. I've had a few nice ones but am far more educated on tequila than bourbons

Buffalo Trace is good especially for the price but man did I get some banging hangover from it. Probably had something more to do with me then it I suppose. Recently had a bottle of Angels Envy private selection it was incredible. Bit pricy but great. Went through a bottle of Big Stick drinking old fashions watching the game the other night with a buddy. Best old fashioned I’ve ever had.

I was burboned up from ten o’clock on yesterday disregard everything I said. I honestly think I was referring to a play from the prior game. Buddy and I were watching old goals from the series. It was that kind of night.

Smooth tasting and a good bang for your buck.

I've started drinking bourbon as well. Figured a glass or two is better than drinking a dozen beers. I got a bottle of Blanton's from my boss as a birthday gift a couple of years ago and liked it so when I finished it I went to the liquor store to get another and found out it's $190 a bottle. I asked the guy there and he suggested Woodinville. It's not bad.

Was the Blanton’s really that much better then other bourbons you’ve tried? I have friends that are big bourbon drinkers I’m more of an amateur I guess. I’ve liked the high end stuff I’ve tried but can’t see spending 200 bucks on a bottle.

I didn't notice all that much difference but I'll admit to being an amateur. I wasn't about to spend that much so I looked for something else. The Woodinville was about $60. Honestly I'm not sure some others are less than that and just as good.

I hear you I consider myself an amateur as well especially compared to my friends. They’ve been all about the brown liquor for a while. Another good one for me at least is Michters. Both the American whisky and the bourbon. The whisky is probably my favorite whisky. It’s like 40 bucks.

You don't need to. There's a whole range of bourbons in the $30-$40/bottle price range that are every bit as good as, and probably better than, ones that are twice as or even more expensive. The right one depends on personal preference. I like Bernheim (especially if you like wheated), Bulleit, 1792, and Buffalo Trace. Others will have different preferences (except Buffalo Trace, which seems universally beloved).

You'll find really good ones that are pricier, too, but you have to ask yourself if they're really that much better than the good, cheaper ones to justify the price. Heck, some of the insanely expensive unicorns out there were $35 when I started drinking bourbon. Did they magically get hundreds of dollars tastier through some distilling wizardry, or did they just inflate the price completely beyond reason?

I'm far from any sort of expert on whiskey, but Eagle Rare is a great bottle for a relatively fair price. I have a buddy that owns a couple restaurants and gets it by the case at wholesale prices for himself. Retail isn't unreasonably priced either. Might creep a bit towards the higher side but it's not up there with some of the $100+ bottles

It's all about the branding........the cache. I remember going to a fancy dinner and drinking $250/bottle wine. Was it good? Sure. Do I have confidence that I could I pass a blindfold taste test comparing it to a good $35 bottle? Nope.

I remember when blended Scotch was all anyone drank. Now single malt is the latest fashion. Maybe if I drank a lot more Scotch, then I could tell the difference?

Agreed. I think it's the same company that makes Buffalo Trace. I haven't bought it in a while, but it was definitely reasonably priced the last time I did.

Yep, higher demand combined with the time it takes to make more given the aging process...and then also a lot (maybe all?) of that distillery's brands are allocated now, so that can affect whether your liquor store of choice is even able to get any. I suspect they're perfectly happy having everyone talk about their brands while they limit supply a bit through allocation. Not so great for us, but great for business.

2 years ago on a golf trip 8 of us brought different bottles of bourbon and whiskey. Those may be the same thing . Idk. Not a big bourbon/ whiskey guy , though I do like Woodford in an old fashioned. Anyway. Blind taste test. Old Grand Dad , the least expensive, won hands down.
