Torterella seems like a Richard. I don’t believe in criticism of a person in front of everyone and talking down to them.
Constructive teaching that doesn’t look to get a rise out of someone is fine.
If you want to go at it with someone do it behind closed doors but then also be a man or woman enough to not hold grudges.
I’ve seen enough bosses treat employees like poop.
I have had more than my share of heated arguments with my bosses and dropped F bombs etc.
At the end of the day we both know I do my job better than most so I mostly get left alone.
With that I would have to tell torts to f himself if he started mind game crap with me.
How does that not get personal between a coach and a player? Torts might think he doesn’t let it get personal but I don’t see how that’s possible.
Briers needs to tell JT that he will listen to his ideas and points of view but in the end it’s DB’s decision.
Maybe DB needs to get all over Torts poop after a badly coached game in the locker room after a game in front of all the players.
Tell the press that Torts messed up etc.
Then let Torts go to DB’s office to discuss. - bird_dog_pa
I get the IDEA of it in a team sports situation or in the military. It's about motivating a group to be greater than the sum of it's parts. Pulling the team together so they fight for each other.
I think your reaction is exactly what Torts is looking for.
I think if they had more skill all this stuff would barely be an afterthought.
Good post. And it's clear that Torts has been like this his whole career. Listen to the stories Brad Richards and Ryan Kesler tell on Spittin' Chiclets. Richards talks about Torts wanting to fist fight Lecavalier while Kesler mentions Torts coming in, immediately stripping his letter and basically goading him the whole year until Kesler finally went back at him and Torts loved it. I think you're right that it is distracting silly mind games.
I also think you're probably right about Sanheim taking his benching without comment. He seems like a quiet, keep to himself kind of guy. But he did mention all of the guys in the locker room having his back. Charlie O'Connor actually mentioned recently that he thinks Tortorella lost the room a bit after that benching. I'm pretty sure they got their asses kicked by Montreal and New Jersey after that Calgary game. He mentioned Torts tried to mend fences in his post-game presser after the Jersey game saying he felt bad for the guys. - TobyFlenderson

maybe torts was brought in to make players want to leave
I disagree on a number of fronts. Sanheim did not have a strong season. He did not push the puck and get involved in the offense enough. However his play away from the puck was solid. The major difference between Sanheim and Ristolainen is Sanheim is a pretty good player who just had a sub par year. While Ristolainen has never really been that good and is declining as a player. I believe that Sanheim will bounce back. I don't like the term of his contract but the AAV is fine for a player of his ability. - MJL
RR has had multiple years with higher points than Travis' best season. That cant be dismissed
Whoa, that would be an interesting hire. - Tomahawk
Not saying she's the one. I'm just tired of the same old recycled people. I'm not interested in Shero or Burke. I may have a little interest in Esche. I just want a fresh face with experience.
Agreed, poor Sanheim, the outrage is just ridiculous. I guess you are not allowed to hurt players feelings. - WhiskeyMan
It is not about the player, it is about the coach.
A coach could tell a player that he has five games to start improving on A, B and C. If he doesn't, he's going to watch three games from the press box for some perspective. And, by the way, one of those games is going to be in your home town.
Again, the way he did it came off as either desperate or petty. Neither paints Torts in a good light.

I’ve heard literal stories of even great players such as Peter Forsberg getting ripped in front of the team by his coaches. Like, what are we doing here? Players getting benched in an arena in front of fans is literally calling out a guy in front of everyone. As a kid, I’ve seen teachers full on yelling at a student in front of the entire. You’re telling me that grown up athletes who are also millionaires can’t handle being yelled at in a locker room with the team watching? Oh and by the way this is all speculation because we don’t even know if this is happening. This is some soft as melted ice cream stuff I’m reading today.

She's definitely a fresh face. Her and Cammi were just hired by the Canucks last season. Would be quite a jump to go from 1st-year AGM to Pres of Hockey Ops. It would make more sense if she were a potential replacement for Flahr. She does have a player agent/law background that would supplement some of what Danny lacks in non-hockey experience.

...and I'm equally confused by yours. Are you responding to my post? - Dkos
The difference is, I’m giving reasons. You’re just saying things and stuff.
Your post just made me like Ristolainen more because his response to Torts being mean to him resulted in positive play on the ice, where as Sanheim by your estimation stuck his head in the same.

The difference between what? Giving reasons about what? I honestly don't know what you think we're arguing about.

And you could be right. The article is assuming she was interviewing for President. If it's for AGM I'm all for a fresh face.
