Goalie as captain and all the bullpoop that came with it was definitely unique to Gillis. I also don't remember any Canuck GM trying to sign a 40+ y/o over the hill player like Sundin for 2 years at $20m(prorated at todays market would be much higher). Luckily Sundin chose 1 year instead... which turned out to be 3 or 4 months in the end. That Sundin signing was pretty unique...

To play Devil's advocate... no, not everyone in the world has had to deal with a family member dying, especially people his age. And, from all accounts, he was SUPER close with his dad, and had to watch him slowly go downhill. I lost my dad when I was a bit younger than him, but wasn't as close with him... it had its impact, but my younger sister was really close with him and it ruined her world.

So, he's grieving, and I can understand how he could view hockey as something that kept him away from his dad and that might have been a source of resentment over the past what, 11 months?
