As has been discussed at length, the Canucks have to be one of the poorest NHL franchises at drafting and developing their own defencemen in NHL history. That definitely needs to change. - LeftCoaster
Aside from QH & OJ you go back all the way to 2005 (Luc Bourdon) when VAN prioritized drafting a D in round one.

New regime, new plan! (I hope) - LeftCoaster
Retooling sounds like an innovative and creative way to becoming a contender. Let's see how this new way of doing things works out. |

Maybe this is the year? I wonder if Reinbacher or Pellikka will be available in their slot? |

I don’t know what their plans are, I just hope whatever they are, they’re more successful at it than the last idiot who ran things into the ground. In his defence though, all the important core players, if you will, on the team are a product of his tenure and all his losing. |

I get it, I wanted a rebuild as well. That said it's not happening, so as long as we're trading first's, do it again ++ and add another quality piece to the defence.
The future is now, the team can't wait for a quality D to come out of their system. They have to trade for one, or go the UFA route. |

The cost of retooling while trying to stay competitive. Similar to treading water. - Marwood
Yeah it's (frank)ing ridiculous. Giving away 1st and 2nd round picks like it's Halloween. |

Been saying this for years, hopefully they can get one of the top 2 guys on d. Would be a good step. |

It really doesnt take for one to develop, i completely disagree with this logic. Fix the cap and draft a d. See if you can land a decent ufa dman. Id be very happy with an offseason like that. |

These guys aren't ready, or were they just bad picks?
So what's a reasonable timeline then 4-8 years??

Without McWard and Johansson. Woo only righty.
Viktor Persson might have quit playing hockey mid season or the Pelicans just thought it better to not include him anymore |

If you go through the list it's clear they didn't value D until the later rounds for several years.

That's only part of the issue, they didn't value D.

Teams like CAR LAK for example have a different philosophy. The result is post season play.

Why waste time drafting defense, when you can just sign 1st round failures like Johansson, or trade multiple picks to acquire one. |

From what I know about Hronek so far, I like him.
If he comes as advertised why not pull off another similar deal? |

Many teams that rebuild don’t succeed so it goes with retools as well. Doesn’t mean anything wrong with either method. |
