I disagree with this personally. If the Canucks were a winning team in playofs, i'd wager he gets votes.
- Retinalz

I'd also disagree in the statement that he is "not close". I don't think he deserves a top 3 vote but I also don't think he is as bad as the people that whine about everything think he is.

The Sharks were one of the worst teams this year and Karlsson plays for them.

He also put up 25 more points more than the next highest scoring defensemen. Everybody's idea of what a D-man should be in 2023 are pretty different but what he did this season was pretty remarkable.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the regular season.

I think far to many voters don't have a clue what the award is supposed to represent.

🙏 hughes is a far better candidate than the guy that was on the ice for the most goals against. I remember when the Norris was for best Defender

I don't think he is the best but for that style of play you are getting a good bang for your buck. He is a lot cheaper than the other high end scoring Dmen. Now bring in a big strong stay at home solid defender. They also need someone that can fire bullets from the point (Salo like)

Hoping that D Petey is the big strong stay home guy.

Related to this, how do they overcome the terrible inefficiencies of things like the Tyler Myers and Oliver Ekman-Larsson contracts? The duo combine for cap hits of more than US$13 million, but the Canucks have been outscored by about 20 goals when either has been on the ice this season. They’re paid like top-pairing defencemen but their performance hasn’t matched their salaries. - Patrick Johnston

Buy them out to replace them with different bad UFA contracts

Clearly they have no interest in rebuilding, which is why they just canned their management team. Rumblings that ownership was extremely disappointed in the lack of movement at the TDL.

Blackhawks went into a rebuild with Toews and Kane, plus they traded Duncan Keith away. This is how it should be done. When it’s over, it’s over. Hanging on for dear life isn’t wise. In three years the Pens will have won nothing and be forced into a rebuild, which they should’ve started three years prior.

But but Granlund..... that likely sealed managements fate.

Thanks for re-posting that, it seems some folks think the Norris is based on how many points a defenseman gets, whether he actually 'defends' or not.

I was thrilled when Frank Serevelli said he wasn’t in his top 5. This dude gets it 👍🏻

If most of the voters treat it like one thing, even though it's supposed to be something else, does it not just become the new thing?

Chicken & the egg situation.

Probably why there's been chatter about creating 2 D awards, one for defending and the other one for being a selfish points whore.

I wouldn't be opposed to that. They have a scoring trophy and a defensive trophy for forwards, why not defensemen too? Call it the Orr trophy and be done with this nonsense.

One of the biggest cowards to wear the jersey. Sorry beta Bo boys
- CanuckDon

Bo could bring the game when he wanted to...but didn't like the rough stuff. Ironically he was on pace for 50+ goals until the Isles gave him 8.5 lol. We'll move on.

+15 and 76 points on a team that is not PO bound and not one Norris vote is retarded.

Even Craig Button said so.

If you use N.Lidstrom as a Norris example, no way in hell are QH or EK in the running, point totals have to be looked at along with the actual Defensive impact the player has shown throughout the season. A player like Heiskanen is a more valuable and impactful defenseman then EK or QH, imo
