No matter what happens I hope he becomes a regular nhl’er. That part worries me more than all the contract stuff.
- shack67

Yup, that’s why I sincerely hope Toronto doesn’t continue expecting a superstar. Let the young guy come in, get some pro hockey under his belt, and begin development at this level. With patience I ca. see this guy becoming a solid middle six guy or even a nice complimentary winger for a top line.

Patience by the fanbase and Toronto media is what I got my fingers crossed for when it comes to him. I’ll be super happy if he thrives quickly, but I won’t expect it either.

Ya i knew he couldn't play on the marlies if he played one game with the leafs, i remember hearing that on the radio. I still believe he would be best served to play meaningful minutes on a marlies run instead on watching the leafs run but dubas will do whats best.
We'll find out soon enough

- Fakepartofme

Yup, the leafs can afford it either way so I’m not too worried. Even if they burn up a year off the ELC I’m certain Toronto could afford him when his contract is up the way they see fit.

So here’s hoping they simply make the best developmental choice for the guy

I knew what it was, I could see it

Maybe I shouldn’t admit this tho, because people could post that they think dozzer is an bumhole but then delete the post before I ban them for it. They wouldn’t be wrong but it would sting. Well, no it won’t but I can say it will right? RIGHT?! lol

Knies would have to play an additional two years at U. of Minnesota before he can "walk" as a UFA.

But here's the kicker: even if he does that, he still can only sign an entry-level contract, so it doesn't make sense - from a financial standpoint - to wait two more years.

- Atomic Wedgie

All true. But the leafs would have to trade his rights and the team making the trade would have to make a deal with his agent beforehand.

I think if he and Dubas didn’t have a verbal agreement in place by now his rights would have already been traded to another team. And said team would have to make the same promises beforehand or he wouldn’t sign with them either.

We’ll agree to disagree. I think he does have a huge upper hand because Knies can just walk.
- shack67

Or Dubas can just trade him.

Remember he almost was to Chicago last season after all?! Their GM had him included in the deal that never was and he leaked it out and pissed Dubas off.

He doesn't have THAT much leverage, honestly it is a 50/50 scenario there and at this point I think he gets signed and comes in, where he plays remains up in the air. I'd suspect he might want a few games up/burn a year, Dubas may want him with Marlies playing more and not burn the year. Dubas COULD sweeten the pot and tell him he gets his shot fully next season on the wing on line 2 even.

Really its honestly a wait and see here since NONE of us know the convos Dubas and the agent have had or are having and what the plan is there for him.

Kinda with Dozzer here on this one.

If he’s ready to leave school, Dubas will have an NHL ELC contract for him to sign. He’s saved cap space for this kind of deal for this very kid. He’s not going to screw around with a try out deal or anything else. If Keefe wants to use him the playoffs, he’ll play. If not, he’s likely to just get a few regular season games.

One thing is for sure:

If Knies does join the Leafs, he'll be the best Arizona-born player to ever play for the Leafs.
