I don’t think Knies gets into the playoffs unless there are injuries (plural).
There is no way I see the Leafs throwing a kid who plays college hockey into a series against a very physical, experienced, fast team like Tbay. Would not be a smart move.
I think he’s a good prospect and will likely compete for a roster spot next season but not this year.
Again, good prospect no doubt. |

You're clearly mistaking "what should be done" with "what the NHL will actually do."
If the point of the salary cap is to ensure that all teams have equal resources, how is it possibly fair to allow one team to be $18M over the cap in the playoffs?
It was an embarrassment to a league that seems to seek out new ways to embarrass itself.
And yes, you and I have been on this merri-go-round 100 times before, with you maintaining that the league couldn't do anything.
Bettman can do anything he franking wants. He disallowed the Kovalchuk contract, even though it was CBA-compliant. He changed the rules and made new ones to punish teams that had signed players to CBA-compliant contracts, that the league accepted.
I doubt the NHLPA would have a problem with making the salary cap apply to the playoffs. Sure, they'd ask for something, but I doubt it would be a big ask. - Atomic Wedgie

Signed yes, guaranteed game time no.
We’ll see. - Dozzer
I think that they play him in a game to burn a season. I would guess that there’s a handshake agreement on that. I could be wrong. |

If he doesn’t sign he will become a UFA
No guarantee to him playing but I can see him getting signed to practice. Doesn’t guarantee any game time tho, especially not on a top 5 cup contender.
I’ll still stick to my 50/50 odds lol - Dozzer
Agreed. But its not like his agent has dubas by the balls like some think.
Put him in a for a few leafs throwaway games or put him on the marlies if the kid wants to go pro. |

I think it’s understood that he will burn the first year. I would imagine that his agent would insist on it or else they tell Dubas to stick it. - shack67
Fairly common enticement. Play hard ball with Knies isn’t sending a good message.
I dont imagine the agent has much leverage here to be telling Dubas to stick anything. - Fakepartofme

He has all the leverage, Dubas really wants him signed and they will gladly burn the first year to get it done.
But you do you. Talking to you is like being on a high school debate team. You just keep choosing the opposite for the sake of arguing. - shack67
So everyone has to agree with you? Oh ok.
I said earlier he'll probably play a few throwaway games for the leafs but its ok that i dont believe knies agent has dubas in any "must give in situation".
But carry on. |

He doesn't have a point, but he has reportedly played well. In the first game, Minnesota won 9-2 with 4 PPG. Knies was even with 3 shots on net. In the second game, they won 4-1. He had 2 shots, a penalty for interference and was +3 - and while not appearing on the score sheet, was apparently a contributor in maintaining puck possession and creating room for plays.
I think he will be a great addition to this team - just maybe not great this year. - Monkeypunk
I only watched a bit of the first game but I watched most of the second. He was pretty noticeably the best player on the ice in it, despite not raking up the points. Single handedly killed off a few penalties, too.
If he's healthy, I assume he'll get in a game or two or however many are left. If he's not, can he join the Marlies when healthy, if he doesn't play any games for the Leafs? |

Im not saying playing hardball, just said the agent doesn't have dubas backed into a corner where he has to give in to his every demand.

Knies right now is like a free agent. Dubas wanted to sign him last year and he declined. He could decline again and I would bet that Dubas has been courting him with the prospect of burning that first year.
Knies has all the leverage. Dubas will give him the max when it comes to bonuses and promise to get him in a couple of games.

I agree and I also agree with Switzerland - I mean Dozzer ( ) that it's probably 50/50.
Finally I agree with Big23 - I can't see him getting into any playoff games unless there are A LOT of injuries & even then is he an upgrade over EVERY other depth forward the Leafs have?
Guess we will see soon and this entire debate will be put to rest and some people will be happy and proud they were right and others will go silent on this topic. lol

Agreed, no doubt they will come to a mutual agreement.
But dubas will still do whats best for team, hes got $950gs for Knies, but the agent doesn't have a huge upper hand on dubas as previously implied |

I won’t pretend to know.
My thoughts are he’ll need to earn it in practice coupled with Keefe wanting to give someone a rest. Guaranteeing the home ice advantage in round 1 will likely play a role in the choice as well.
I can see it going the way where he gets played but I can also see the way where he’s signed to simply begin his first professional practices as well. |

Yuppers.
Id prefer he play with marlies but figure he'll get a few reg season games in with the leafs and dont see him playing in playoffs unless the leafs are in real bad shape or he lights it up during the reg season games. |

I would have him with the Leafs on the taxi squad rather than with the Marlies. I want him part of the mix, seeing the playoffs first hand. |

I believe it's either NHL or the Marlies, If he play 1 NHL game, he can't play in the AHL er something like that.
Let him get his feet wet with the Marlies and let him compete for roaster or a rooster spot next year.
it's a wait and see what happens thing now. |

Just looked it up, there’s a hiccup of some sort putting him on the marlies
Will he be eligible to play for the AHL's Toronto Marlies?
In short, the answer is no, as Knies is ineligible to play for the Marlies this season if he plays a game with the Leafs after his college season concludes, based on the current NHL-AHL agreement.
Toronto intentionally left one open contract slot and just enough cap space to fit a maximum-salary entry-level contract into the mix, signalling that the club intends to go the NHL route right away with Knies, who has some leverage and could return to school without a one-way NHL deal.
The Leafs could try and finesse an entry-level deal that doesn't begin until next season and plug Knies into the Marlies lineup for their Calder Cup run this year, but that seems very unlikely at this point.

No matter what happens I hope he becomes a regular nhl’er. That part worries me more than all the contract stuff. |

Knies would have to play an additional two years at U. of Minnesota before he can "walk" as a UFA.
But here's the kicker: even if he does that, he still can only sign an entry-level contract, so it doesn't make sense - from a financial standpoint - to wait two more years. |

Ya i knew he couldn't play on the marlies if he played one game with the leafs, i remember hearing that on the radio. I still believe he would be best served to play meaningful minutes on a marlies run instead on watching the leafs run but dubas will do whats best.
We'll find out soon enough |
