If we ever win a cup I’ll probably be the most obnoxious fan in the land. The next day I’ll be ordering vanity plates for the car.

- Santo_44

nah, most people would just avoid HB for a while

Leafs would party, get in a big circle...put a cup in the middle...and at the end, drunk steedot would drink it, it is his destiny.

This is very true.

I hate the Habs as much as anyone but I also recognize the greatness of some of their players over the years. I felt a little bit of awe at their mocked-up dressing room in the HHOF

I don't take another team having stars on their roster as a personal affront. Hell, I even think Marchand is a great player and should one day be in the hall of fame, as much as he is one of the most hated players in the league.

- Aetherial

Exactly. The hatred for anything leafs is astounding. But I enjoy every minute of it and I think it’s one of the best things about being a Toronto fan.

Sure that stuff is frustrating but no way it's near as frustrating as being a fan of another team and having Leaf Nation in your skull 24/7.

I wouldn't know, I don't take this stuff seriously. Over the years I realized this is just entertainment, no need to get emotional about this. It's all for fun and none of us have any impact on how our respective teams are doing.

Always loved price.

I can understand hating Bunting. Or (frank) even Schenn because he hurts people.

But Matthews is a superstar talent, he plays a clean game, doesn’t troll anyone.

- Santo_44

I assume it's largely kids - I mean I know it's not entirely, but . . .

When I was in my early teens, Wayne Gretzky was busy being the best player on the planet and I didn't take the time to appreciate it. In fact, I'd say that I didn't really appreciate a talent like Mario until I was around 25 or 26. I wanted to hate them more than I wanted to like them.

I started to see how good Mario was as he started to break down.

Honestly, when he came back as a 35 year old after dealing with back surgery, cancer and being retired for 4 years - and then put up 76 points in 43 games, or 1.77 points / game . . just wow. I was glad I was appreciating him to witness that stuff at a time when we thought elite scoring at that rate was gone - and he did it after not even playing for 4 years and being over 35.

That would the best advice I could give to any young hockey fan: It's okay to hate the other guys because they play on other teams, but you can still appreciate them for who they are and what they bring to the game.

I actually really liked living there. It’s a fair sized city but people act like it’s a little town. I wore my Dion jersey everywhere and it would lead to hockey discussions no matter where I was.
- shack67

i was wearing a laff shirt in the commissary at naval air facility el centro yesterday👍

some old blowhard asked me if i was from toronto then proceeded to tell me his life story about his family in the northern USA close to canada and maybe even a relative in montreal🤦🏿‍♂️

absolutely no clue about the loafs or hockey 🤦‍♂️

all this while i’m trying to check out and he’s standing between me and the card reader 🤦🏿‍♂️

i finally had to tell this old jarhead windbag that i had poop to do, he had to move out of my way and semper fi🤦‍♂️

it’s always like this if i where a shirt with ANYTHING on it 🤦🏿‍♂️

music, pop culture, humour, civics, an old hotel, etc 🤦‍♂️

some foghorn is just waiting for a reason to talk my ear off 😡

even when I’m just wearing a plain shirt people feel compelled to comment on my incredible stature and physique and ask about football, mma, kung fu, etc😡

what a (frank)ing joke🤦🏿‍♂️

edit: nice alliteration 👍

That's absolute loser talk.

I know for a fact that me trolling in the Tampa Bay thread in October is going to pay dividends this year.

FFS, you call yourself a fan?

I must have spent $700 on Leafs stuff at Zellers, and when I watch the Leafs play, I know that they can feel my support.

Many folks do take it to an emotional level and in my experience despite the bad rap Leaf fans get for being too emotional, too invested or obnoxious etc. there are just so many more fans of other teams that spend a completely irrational amount of time hating any/everything Leafs - more so than they love their own team at times.

It's wild but I guess it's the old the enemy of my enemy is my friend thing.

I recall being in Montreal and having lots of great interactions with Habs fans but also many interactions that were unprovoked instances of Habs fans in my face screaming at me how bad the Leafs were etc. but overall I had far more good interactions with Habs fans in Montreal.

Ottawa is it's own disaster, I was going to Leaf games there when both teams were good and meeting in the playoffs regularly. I don't recall any good interactions with Sens fans at all but holy man the aggressiveness towards Leafs fans there was next level!

Every superstar gets the same vitriol from fans for some reason. I’m old enough to remember Orr in his prime and the hatred for him was incredible. Coaches Corner didn’t help with Cherry calling Lemieux the biggest floater in the league and labeling Crosby as the golden boy.

Of course when Mario got cancer he became Cherrys’ favourite player and he pretended that he always was.

Gawd, they were fun to watch.

- Atomic Wedgie

If the Leafs win the cup I really think it’s going to ruin some peoples summers

They have built such a hate obsession that the leafs losing brings them so much happiness, and when that doesn’t happen they are going to have a rough time

I will get a new tattoo with the Leafs logo and the cup and the year of course

Tell them Matthews scored 60 in 73 games, and it took magical McJesus until game 74.

Watch them smolder. If they don't say, "Well, Gretzky scored 50 in 39!" they have failed their Oiler Captcha and are most likely robots.

The larger the fanbase, the more crazy fans you will find, it's just normal. I live in Ottawa, it's a weird hockey market, mostly divided 3 way between the Sens, Leafs and Habs fans. Most sens fans except the young ones were either Leafs or Sens fans growing up and there is a real hatred for their former childhood team.

This should be the year.
Lightning are a season older
Vassy has been ordinary
however
Leafs have proven to be most creative at finding ways to "snatch defeat from the hands of victory".
