I think the Rangers one is probably the most surprising thing about this infogram - TheMussel
Agreed - and Leafs with a 62.3% chance of making it to the 2nd must be up there as well |

Heard a random stat. Can't remember it exactly.
the last 8 or 10 teams who swept their opponent and faced a team that went 7 games have lost 8 of the 9 times.
Being fresh doesn't mean poop. In fact I would argue going from Boston and TB to an Edmonton would be a breeze.
All playoff games are intense.
And good, I hope they face teams that keep them mentally engaged. - Santo_44
I think that stat cherry picks a sweep vs. a 7 game, which isn't really an indicator - it's a curiosity.
Does the 7 game series make a significant difference vs the 6 game series? Does a sweep make a significant difference over a 5 game series? What styles do the teams play? How many hits are thrown? How intense is it? Some of that is more subjective, obviously, but I think it factors in.
I mean last year 6 series went 7 games. The teams that advanced to the next round were 3-3. They year before they were 3-0; the year before 1-2; 4-0 the year before; 0-2 the year before . . .so no definite causation. But we do know that teams in back-to-back games usually fare worse, especially with travel, and additionally 3-in-4 can be tough as well. The correlation there is just that a lot of hockey takes a toll.
I recall a stat - that I'm sure has been beaten by now - but back in 1993 when the Leafs faced the Kings they said that no team had ever won 3 consecutive 7 game series (note: the Kings did it in 2014 at the very least!).

I remember in 09 Carolina made it to the east final after series' vs the Devils and Bruins. Those 7 games vs Boston were a war. By the time they got to face Pittburgh in the Conference finals they had nothing left and the Pens just skated circles around them. The tank was empty. - BINGO!
Or maybe Pittsburgh was just better and deserved to win?
I will never have the "I am tired" excuse for playoffs.
Even injuries, when Boston went deep they had one of the most brutal injury lists post playoffs and did great.
The only excuse I see is when there are multiple bad injuries that keep players out of the lineup. |

One of my good friends is an Oilers fan. He's not necessarily insufferable, but he can get close to it. He is the only person I know that hates the Leafs more than he loves his own team. Everything bad in the NHL can be traced back to the Leafs somehow, like 6 degrees of separation poop.
He was steaming when Matthews was nominated and won the Hart last year. Claimed that the Toronto and East Coast media influenced it all - as witnessed by all the previous Hart Trophies won by Leafs in recent years..........
He didn't have an answer for why he won the Lindsay too.......... - Kinger34
When I speak with Matthews haterz, I don't even bring up the Hart.
Just go straight to the Lindsay Award. Gawd, it pisses them off. |

I don't care about logic or facts. I'm a diehard Leafer whos been in Deadmonton for two decades chirping these clueless retards and I cannot have the Oilers winning the Cup, period. - Tee-Dot
I agree because I was there for twelve years and I know all about Oilers fans. It’s impossible to have a hockey discussion there without someone bringing up the eighties. |

Pittsburgh absolutely was the better team, but the Canes were totally uncompetitive. They were cooked. Canes were more or less a one line team at that point and Eric Staal had just finished going shift after shift after shift vs Chara in his prime for 7 straight games. Playoffs are very much a war of attrition. |

so 11-7? Seems like game 7 teams fair well in the following round to me.....
There is also stats that show when teams have multiple days rest dont fair well against teams that just played 1-2 days before.
I think what I am saying here that saying a team going through a "war" doesn't mean crap. There are pros and cons to it. |

No kidding. Even they ramble on about Horcoff, Brewer, Pisani, etc. You don't see us reminiscing about Antropov, Ponikarovsky, and Coliacaivo (sp?). |

I thought when I moved there that I would cheer for them unless they were playing the leafs. But after getting to know their fans I found myself hoping that they would lose every game. |

Can't wait to see the Oilers fans citing 60+ goals for McDavid as the reason he wins the Hart this year - although it is only one of many reasons why.
I was told last year that 60 goals shouldn't mean much.

The difference is that leaf fans don’t hate McDavid and try to deny how good he is. It seems like all that matters to Oilers fans is having the best player in the league.
I guess it stems from being allowed to enter the league and keep Gretzky in the fold. |
