Auston either agrees to a contract before July 1 2023 or they need to trade him.
Can’t risk losing him for nothing.

Leafs will ride out his contract

If Dubas is still the GM they will. If he doesn't resign before that and there's a GM with any cojones he will hopefully cash in.

If Arizona offers Matthews a part ownership in the Coyotes how could the Leafs match that.
Face facts that after next season Matthews is gone from Toronto.

Let’s add not understanding how the CBA works to the list of things you don’t understand about hockey.

Arizona may suck as a hockey town but the one thing it has that very few other teams/states have is no state income tax and that is huge much like Nevada,Florida and Texas. They also have tax incentives for people to move their unlike in Los Angeles where they just passed a 4% mansion tax on any home over $4,000,000 which surely #34 would be in. I see it as maybe a 15% chance he'd play in Arizona but with all the incentives to move their financially it's not that inconceivable that he would.

The Kings are interesting with at some point Doughty and Kopitar coming off the books I would say in the next 2 seasons.

Well, if Matthews leaves he'll miss his chance to play on a team with McDavid.

Marner is the true star of this team. Matthews is number 2.
I'm more worried about losing Marner.

Matthews is very enigmatic. No real sense if he stays or not, but suspect dollars might play a role.

Under the U.S.-Canada tax treaty, signing bonuses of U.S. residents playing in Canada are only taxed at 15% by Canada. Federal income tax that he pays is at 37% (in Arizona and every other state). He can deduct a good chunk of the Canadian tax from his US taxes owing.

Of the $58M Matthews has earned, more than $53M has been paid in signing bonuses.

The more you know, eh.

Leafs will offer him a max contract. A number of other teams will do the same. Money won’t be an issue, it will be all about where he wants to play.

Assuming that salary cap in 2024-25 will be $88M, I predict that the Leafs will offer AM34 a contract of 8yrs x 14. That’s a 112 million reasons for him to stay a Leaf.

ARZ is a salary floor team and projects to stay that way for a long time. No way are they offering AM a contract for $14+ and filling out the remainder of their roster for $50M ($64M is salary cap floor) while simultaneously tell AM that he will help them lure marquee players. What marquee players are coming when the team can’t afford them?

He can get an 8 year deal from the Leafs. If he signs elsewhere, it's only 7.

I honestly didn't know that. I was on a tv show in Canada called Roast Battle in 2016 and I live in Los Angeles and literally the Canadien Govt has been hounding me for 6 years saying I didn't pay the appropriate tax amount which I did. I would think Arizona could turn it around real fast if he signed there with the treasure trove of prospects they have coming and free agents on both sides of the border seeing it as a destination spot as crazy as that seems. I would also think the no state income tax is incredibly appealing to someone in Matthews's situation.
