Torts, the self-proclaimed fair-dealer and straight-shooter....

Nobody loves to play favorites and mind-games as much as he does.

- Tomahawk

Really? So tell me, who has Torts treated unfairly this season? When has Torts not been brutally honest with his players? What mind-gamesd has he played and on which players?

The second part of my post covered the effort requirement.
- mickel25

Yes. Its truly amazing that some on here, who most likely never picked up a stick on a sheet of ice, have this idea that Torts does not know how to coach a professional hockey team while he approaches 700 NHL wins

It's impossible to treat every player the same at every level. You are not going to expect ND to score 30 goals and bench him when he is not performing at that level.

You can absolutely manage engagement and effort level the same for every player though.

- mickel25

True. You have to know your players. Scratching a player is a motivator but it can backfire on a player who doesn’t respond well to that. May be better to have him play through it. Some players need a kick in the ass publicly and others need a private talk with the coach. A coach has to be part psychologist.

4 out of 6 seasons the Oilers get #1 pick, ending with McDavid, just a joke.

When Torts is asked about Coots, he sounds like he’s the only one in the organization who doesn’t even care if he’s dead or alive! Like, he should be the first guy who wants to see what Couturier can do.

He's just waiting to scratch him when the Flyers play in Arizona next season.

Torts wants to win. He doesn’t have 6 better defensemen on the ice if he benches Provorov. I’ve never had a coach at any level that treats all his players the same.
- Minnyhock

All players SHOULDN'T be treated the same.

Wow are you naive. There are areas where Torts will treat everyone the same. For example, Torts wants all players to live up to the standard that he is setting, being competetive every night, playing with max effort, playing within the system he as his staff have established, etc. Torts has proven this in his benching of Sanheim, Risto, DeAngelo, Hayes, TK and to some extent Farabee. But clearly Torts, and any coach, treats an up and coming young player like Tippet or Cates who make a mistake trying to make a play much differently than he would treat a veteran player who made the same mistake. Torts has never stated he will treat all players the same outside of upholding the standard.

So...you agree with him.

It's simply not a reality that a coach treats all players the same. The issue is just don't BS people and say that you do. Tortorella reveals himself to be more mediocre by the day.

So you are saying you want the Penguins in the lottery with a generational talent available? Where have we seen that scenario before? I'll take them making the playoffs rather than risking them falling into the bottom 10
- mr4tno

They wont be in the lottery if they miss the playoffs...if they miss likely will draft 15

They are in the lottery than can only move up a max of 10 spots though.

Only the NHL would want the next big thing playing in a mickey mouse arena in a market where no one cares about hockey.
- BiggE

Yup. It’s pretty crazy almost all the big names have gone to small markets the last 10 years or so.

League is probably dying for Bedard to end up in Chicago or Philly.

No he sounds like a coach who doesn't want a guy to come back from what should be a season ending surgery for no reason and play just a few games.

I agree that "It's simply not a reality that a coach treats all players the same." However I strongly disagree that Torts "BSs people by saying he does" because he has never stated that. I also strongly diagree that "Tortorella reveals himself to be more mediocre by the day". Torts IMO has had one of the best coaching seasons in his career this year and if anything has proven he and his staff are well above mediocrity.

I'm naive. That's a good one.

I await the day when you turn on Tortorella just like you did after your period of worship was over with Fletcher and the path to the cup that he put the team on.

i think at this point we know what type of player coots is. the question is will the surgery change the product.

Givani Smith can come off of IR tonight, he may play instead of Fitzgerald. Last time they went 7D with Fitzgerald, I think Mo was actually putting him out as the 4th line RW.
Haven’t heard if Lyon is playing, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t. Bob should get the night off, he’s played something like 13 games in a row.

Watch, Tippett is gonna get a hat trick tonight.

or the habs. i am hoping the scandal in chi town comes with negative karma. they have had their players and cups to go with it. i have no problem with them being horrible for years.

I wholeheartedly disagree that Provorov is in Torts’ good graces. Torts doesn’t even bring up Provorov. I think I heard they had a meeting last summer and Torts told him point blank that he thinks he’s a shell of what he used to be. Not to mention DeAngelo, York and Sanheim seem to get power play time ahead of Provorov.

The players on the side of the bench who receive back rubs after ever shift I believe are Laughton, Cates, Tippett, DeAngelo and Seeler. Maybe Risto too but not like the 5 I mentioned. Everyone else seems fair game to public criticism.

- SuperSchennBros

Laughton definitely must be a favorite. I can't tell you how many times he's taken stupid penalties that cost the team this year. I think Laughton puts in a good effort night in and night out, but when people mention "Hockey IQ", I don't think that he's in that conversation.

interesting. i look at him as a hard worker. not as much of a lack of iq, but skills all around. he's a really good 3rd line player or a competent 2 line wing depending on his line mates. doesn't overly excel but is average or better in most categories.

myers is an example of a low hockey iq. and if you haven't paid attention risto.

Coots himself probably wants to play to show the league that he is 100%. There's a better trade market for healthy players than the players that are in question - although somehow someone did take Patrick in a trade.

yes, and you don't know where you are until you get back into game action. he probably feels great practicing, but games are different.
