Jays #6 spending team

bold strategy, lets see if it pays off

- senstroll

Not really a "bold" strategy as theyve had years of not spending.
I think this will be the norm and should be

Since the Habs own their first round pick this year, I am strongly rooting against them!

I'm almost more interested in their end to the season than our own.

- Scabeh

Its the only reason im hoping the panthers get in.

Your fun fact of the day:

Of all starting goalies (I put in the arbitrary filter of 35 games or more, since most teams have played 70 games to date):

Samsonov is 5th in SV% and 2nd in GAA.

And here's a fun stat that blew me away:

Erik Kallgren started 9 games for us this year. I had totally forgotten that. His numbers aren't bad for our 4th string goaler: 3-2-4 record, .898 SV%, 2.67 GAA.

Take these stats slightly further:

Using evolving-hockey (which filters by Fenwick Attempts, so I used 1300 which is about average for a goalie starting half the games, but does include some guys with fewer starts on worse teams that face a lot of shots), I took a look at the GA / 60 and xGA / 60 (taking the GA or xGA and dividing them by minutes played / 60) to get a game view of each goalie at 5v5.

There are 31 goalies that qualify in that mix and since these are starters, the average GSAx/60 is better than even at 0.2. Samsonov is 5th in the league in this statistic. He also has the 3rd best GA/60 at 5v5 among qualified goalies. Only Ullmark and Gustavsson are ahead of him.

Now when you rank the GA/60 (how the goalie fared) in comparison to the xGA (how the team performed), you can see some guys like Sorokin and Saros are clearly carrying their teams and Martin Jones (gee again?) and Kahkonen are sinking their teams (for what it's worth Fleury, Thompson and Husso have also been notably poor). Samsonov falls in just under the stellar seasons of Sorokin and Saros along with Hellebuyck and the very surprising Montembeault.

Note that neither Montembeault or Gustavsson would have appeared in your look because they've played on 32 games.

In terms of pure raw GSAx/60 and including 35 games as a caveat, only Sorokin, Ullmark and Saros have performed better than Samsonov. By contrast, at his best, Andersen was probably around 7th.

Well boys, here goes. Just about to do up me roster for round 5 in the off chance I advance. Winning so far but he went overboard with 4-gamers... I have more of the quality picks.

My opponent scored more pts than me in the 1st 3 rounds, and he killed the #1 seed last. I'll be going down swinging though

I would have signed him last year when he was winning, to a multi year deal with a 4 in it. I ate poop on that hot take with a big spoon.

I'm so torn on this.

I've said numerous times this year that the Islanders weren't necessarily a non-playoff team (also while saying that the acquisition of Horvat was nonsensical given the relative age of their team and there obvious and imminent rebuilding requirements). They have a lot of tenacious players who are hard on the puck and know how to play defensive hockey.

But I've probably always hated the Islanders since that 1978 series. I'd still be happy if they missed the playoffs.

Florida really should make it with the talent on that team, but it would be great if they didn't.

Pittsburgh is basically crappy Boston - older, slower, and living amidst the prediction of a downfall and playing through it - at times far better than expected. Because I'll always like Crosby, I don't really root against Pittsburgh - even though they've been an easy out in the first round for several years in a row now.

Ottawa, Washington and Buffalo I think are just too far back. I mean it's not out of the realm of possibility to close a 6 point gap in 12 games, but it's really implausible. Moneypuck gives them 0.9% for Washington, 1.1% for Ottawa and 1.8% for Buffalo. Hockey-Reference is more optimistic, giving Washington 3.5%, Ottawa 4.2% and Buffalo 7.4%.

But I think it really boils down to the 3 teams in that WC contention right now. Florida has, arguably, the easiest schedule with 7 games remaining against non-playoff teams, while the other two teams have 6 each.

Right now, you'd have to pick the Islanders and Florida. In that WC2 spot, the Islanders would be an interesting matchup for Boston, I think - although in the regular season Boston has thumped them all year. Florida has actually fared better.

Florida actually has a forward lineup that can matchup decently against Bostons

The D is meh but they have Montour and Ekblad.

Bob is a wild card.

Florida would have a chance, the Isles lose in 4 or 5.

We'll see how he does. I have a concern that you have too much offense and not enough puck retrieval and defensive responsibility. It feels like a Tyson Barrie type of mistake.
