Fan means fanatic. If you see yourself as a casual fan, you’re not really a fan. That’s how I watch golf, if I have something better to do then screw the final round.

Fan may also come from "fancy" which is a collective term for followers of a certain sport or hobby.
Fanatic i believe is derived from a latin word meaning shrine....it may also come from a swedish word too.
