Tom is right that what occurred in the game AND CAN ACTUALLY BE CAPTURED BY STATISTICAL ANALYSIS points to the Pens having a strong showing. And, EVERYONE is correct that this displays the limits of statistical analysis, because to say that Pitt deserved to win at all is ludicrous.

Edit: About the 2nd part of the sentence, I only have the publicly published tools to use. They both align. So it's hard for me to be like "Nope don't care 66.6% is wrong." That doesn't mean it was a bad game to watch. It was very. They were a little lax defensively. But Saturday game was a vintage game of their from last year.

Like most statistical models, these should evolve. They need to better capture game flow. Obviously the Pens/Preds we’re going to press being down as much as they were. The models should capture the “bend don’t break” from the rangers.

We’ve (you and I) discussed this in the past. They don’t capture the error term, which is exactly what you’re talking about. In sound statistical modeling, the error term explains the variance of outcomes associated with the model (I.e. Igor playing better than his avg this year)

And that error term is exactly why you can’t solely rely on statistics. Not just in hockey, but in any application.
