When a guy would fight a guy with a visor and the other guy didn’t have 1, they would both un-button the chin strap so they wouldn’t shred their hands. The NHL banned that to cut down on fights. - nyrangers9479
Banned it because the players hitting their head on the ice if there was a take down, i believe

There is no rule that guys have to take off the helmets to engage in a ight. You can still fight with your helmet on. I just posted a video showing that? You also can't just take a normal shift without a helmet now. You know why, because the league doesn't want guys cracking their skulls on the ice.

Then don’t make the visors mandatory and guys won’t undo the chin strap. - nyrangers9479
Well the whole visor thing I'm torn on. Its a good idea, especially after what happened to Staal, Berard, but its not like guys are getting eye injuries every game... I personally would wear one, but I do think that is one area where it probably could be optional. I think most players wear them anyway, so I didn't see the need to make it mandatory

It's a rule.
Rule 9.7. Starting in 2013-14 season players drafted after 2010 with 25 or less games experience have to wear a visor. You will see a day in the near future every player has to wear a visor. Just like every player has to wear a helmet. Game evolves.
Martin is one of the ones grandfathered in. I think Reavo too? I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head but I'm sure there are a few. - eichiefs9
Jamie and Jordie Benn. That might be the full list.

Who’s arguing it’s a rule? We know it’s a rule, a dumb one. If a player chooses not to wear a visor that’s on them knowing the potential consequences. In response to the mandatory visors, guys started unbuttoning the chin straps, then the NHL banned that also. Guys used to also take the helmets off so they didn’t break their hands on the helmet thrown a punch, the NHL banned that also.

I know, I'm saying I think it could have been optional as most young players coming into the league wear them
He's not saying it's not a rule. He's saying it shouldn't be. I misinterpreted it as well.
I'm torn but I am also sensitive to eye injuries. - JRR1285
It 100% should be a rule. Every a American league had some tip of rule requiring facial protection before the NHL changed. A visor saved Nate Thompson career and likely his eye. So it helps one player it's worth it. Especially at the expense of player like Ryan Reaves.

He’s so caught up in trying to fight every single post he doesn’t even read. I’m starting to think Jimbo was right and this place was much better off when he was banned.

You just reminded me that they are also apparently not calling this anymore:
If a player penalized as an instigator of an altercation is wearing a face shield, he shall be assessed an additional Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty.

But if Nate Thompson or Ryan Reaves decided FOR THEMSELVES knowing the potential consequences, who are u or the NHL to make them wear one? U decide not to wear one that’s on u, no one else.
