Agreed.
Didnt mind a hard fault tie. - Fakepartofme
To this day, I'm still fine with a tie. The shoot out bonus point is still somewhat dumb in that a team is awarded a bonus point for winning a skills competition. When I watch a game if my team loses in OT or wins in OT, I'm either disappointed or happy as you'd expect - but when they lose in the shoot out, I'm pretty ambivalent. When they win, I'd say I'm also not that happy - just more of a "Well, the extra point's nice." sort of feeling.
I don't think it's accomplishing what the NHL wants to - but as most fans know - OT does. I don't care if it's 10 minutes of 3-on-3 or 4-on-4, but I'd still be in favour of getting rid of the shoot out and going back to ties after the OT.
BTW, if we did get rid of the Shoot out, the only change in the current standings would be that the Islanders would currently be the WC1 and Pittsburgh would be WC2 instead of the other way around (and Pittsburgh would be back by 1 point with 3 games in hand) and Edmonton would be sitting in 2nd in their division and LA 3rd by a 1 point margin.

I don't really have a problem with the shootout.
But I hate the whole extra point thing.
The fact that some games are giving out more points than others unbalances everything imho.

Binnington got tossed from the game last night.
There was almost a goalie fight last night. - zazzle
He's another one of those guys - as a fan of the game, I'm sick of his crap. He's a clown and a suck. When things don't go his way, he lashes out at someone. He should have been suspended by now for his dumb antics.

I feel the same way - OT is cool and I'm fine with keeping it but I think the shootout is just to gimmicky and is essentially taking a team sport and deciding the winner by a personal skills competition. Anyone remember when the shootout first came to the league and the chatter about having players who maybe wouldn't be NHL regulars maybe get jobs in the NHL because they were so good at the shootout it pushed them from AHL/NHL Tweener to probably a full time NHL'er? Or the very few times it happened where a team pulled the goalie who played the whole game and threw in the backup because he was better at shootouts?
I am fine with a tie, the OT was supposed to and should stop teams from just playing the last 10 minutes of a game not wanting to lose a point. I would be supportive of an extra point for a regulation win vs an OT win though to push teams to go for it in regulation time. I'd also be fine with getting rid of the 'loser point' for the same reason Scabby has mentioned. |

Yeah. I don't know the real solution there either. The 3-2-1 system for regulation wins/overtime wins/overtime losses (or ties if that option stayed on the table) always comes up. There is still disparity in the points system and teams are still getting points for losing. If a 3-2-1 system were involved, the Leafs would be the #2 team in the league with 123 points (Boston would have 144; Jersey would have 122 and Carolina 121) and the Islanders would sit 7 points ahead of the Pens for the WC1 spot. In the west it would be the same 8 teams, but Edmonton would sit #1 at 117 points with Vegas and Dallas trailing at 113 and 112, respectively. Colorado would actually sit in the WC2 spot with a 4 point lead over Calgary.
The problem with looking at current standings and applying a different points system is that it fails to consider how teams would alter their strategies to try and win in regulation. Losing to a division rival and surrendering 1 point in an OT loss is less painful than losing to a division rival and surrendering 3 points. So if you're tied the final 5 minutes do both teams play a boring and safe game - or do some teams just push for the possible 3 point gain?
In a 3-2-1 system, for the record, Montreal would drop one spot into the 5th draft spot with 70 points, ahead of Chicago and San Jose (63 each), Columbus (62) and Anaheim (60)

3 points for a win.
1 point for a tie.
No OT.
No shootout.

3-2-1 is the obvious solution.
If you're giving 3 pts in OT you should be giving 3 pts for a regulation win.
The NHL seems to think the "season total points" record needs to be preserved. The problem with that logic? By awarding 3pts in OT they've already corrupted the record. |

If anything, they look slightly worse? Perhaps this is just a period of adjustment where Keefe is trying to figure out the optimum lineup but for a team with this much firepower, they are looking decidedly mediocre.
The silver lining: I have zero expectations for this team to advance so heartbreak is not on the table. |

I put the US feed on and holy (frank), it's so much better than Sportsnet. - GreatGigInTheSky
Yes, I too partook in the TNT feed. Sportsnet needs to be punted, in a couple of years, as the National Cable broadcasters in Canada. I'd much prefer the TSN announcers anytime. Having Cheryl Pounder at the desk is a definite upgrade over that giraffe on Sportsnet.

The Leafs are trying to experiment with their lineup, going down the stretch. With 6 new bodies, at the Trade Deadline, they have to find what works. Last night, they experimented with trying to lock down a game and had success. Trying to limit odd man chances takes away from their offense, but that game could have went either way. It also proves that Samsonv is our guy for game one. He's dialed in and ready to go. Murray, take a seat and book your flight to Robidas Island, next year. Tampa is starting to ramp up their game and tonight's game in Jersey will give you an indication of what they're going to be like, come playoff time. The 11 forwards, 7 defenseman nonsense needs to go. The Leafs game is stagnant, due to already knowing who they're playing in round 1.

Not a bad game by the Leafs
Samsonov was excellent and if the Leafs want to go deep one of their goalies have to step up so that was a very good sign
11 and 7 is okay, I want Schenn in there, I think he will give a trickle down effect with the rough stuff
I am fine with giving the 11 and 7 a run just because if there are injuries to the forward group in playoffs I think 11 and 7 is more optimal than throwing out Steeves and Holmberg
I think 12 and 6 will be the optimal lineup when filly healthy
Games don't matter here so just try things and get both goalies ramped up
Also great game by Mo, hopefully a sign of things to come. I feel a lot more comfortable with this team right now with AM ramping up too. |

Rielly was also fantastic last night. Easily his best game of the season.
And outside of mishandling the puck on the poopty OT ice, Liljegren was great, too.
Leafs are gonna need the both of them playing to their abilities going into the playoffs.
Matthews getting healthy. Samsonov playing fantastic. Things you love to see. |
