5v5 is where this team struggled, Patrick Kane doesn’t help 5v5.

I was a bit pessimistic when they acquired Kane. Chemistry is crucial and wasnt sure if the "Magic" can reappear after so many years. After watching the first 2 games I was disappointed in Panarins and Kanes play, too many cross ice passes. I didnt think GG would break them up and just cater to his star players but he did and I think these new lines are stronger.

But what is turning my opinion is not what happened during the game but Kanes 60 second interview, he said he doesnt want to step on anyone's toes and is settling in but HE WANTS the puck. CK20 and Tro will im sure be happy to oblige and let him carry it as CK20 had Mika carry it majority of the time.

Yes this team still needs to tighten up defensively and Igor has to find the next level again but I really love these 4 lines. They will be really be hard to play against come playoff time!!

Well said Brukman! Last night he looked the most comfortable since he got here I thought. He just left an org over 16 years and 3 cups, it’s going to take time to get him to become a Ranger.

Absolutely not, still going to root for him and the Rangers, I’ll be at the game against Tampa on the 5th. With that being said, I still don’t see a Stanley Cup team in front of us. Hope im wrong, but it’s not put together correctly. I wasn’t crazy about getting Tarasenko but I’ve actually been surprised by him and wouldn’t mind if we found a way to resign him in the off-season.

So let’s think about this. He was a -1, but had a point 5v5. That means he was on the ice for 2 of WSH 3 goals to be a -1. Being on the ice for 2 of 3 goals is good to u?

Let's break it down and not be lazy about it. Skip this post if you want as I'm about to go into Saver territory.

First goal against was created out of the opposite corner of Kane. Trocheck left 2 players in front of the net with Schneider to engage a player who was being pursued by Harper and posed minimal danger in the corner if any. He got caught and the goal was scored.

Kane's Primary responsibility there is to have a proper gap against the attacking defensemen on the point (who was actually a forward when a pinch was made earlier) and not let him come in back door or leave him entirely wide open for a shot from the point. Secondarily he should be slumping down to help should the center vacate because the attacking players in the slot are more dangerous, this is where he gets caught a little in between. Kane could have left his man and engaged the shooter more directly but that would have left Dowd completely open at the point. All of this is precipitated by Trocheck being a bit too aggressive and failing to pick off the pass. In the end, the shot came from an uncovered forward which was not Kane's primary defensive assignment on the opposite side of the slot. Damn near perfect shot too.

Second goal, Fox has a shot blocked in the offensive zone which allows Wash to break out. It starts as a 3 on 2 with Kane and Fox backchecking. Mikola comes back and Kane correctly goes to pick up the 3rd attacking player A3...but there are 2 more attacking players coming. Why? The pass is made from the side wall to A4 (Oshie) so Kane releases on A3 and plays the pass from A4 back to A3 as he is already in the shot lane...Instead of shooting or passing because Kane is there, A4 finds A5 who scores off the pad of Mikola. Where was the rest of the backchecking forwards? Kreider and Trocheck changed instead of backchecking. If Kane locks in on A3 there, A4 walks right down the slot and shoots. Kane did the best he could here given the situation.

Going back to the original point though...and why I took exception to your lazy +/- jab.

Kane was directly involved in 2 goals for...and while he was on the ice for two 5v5 goals against and while that doesn't change his stat line, blaming him would be misplaced.

This doesn't mean he plays good defense, it simply illustrates that a -1 stat line in the scheme of the game is misleading at best and disingenuous without context.

Sorry for the rambling.

Thanks Ryan. It's a great post. What it highlights is what we have discussed a lot lately and I have been noting in most blogs - the defensive structure continues to be lacking. This makes the D look worse at times then they are and shows that the forwards are not picking up the slot or the trailer, leaving wide open gaps and shots.

If I’m wrong it means we won the cup, I can live with that. Kane isn’t the player we needed, that’s a fact and if u took ur homer glasses off you’d see that.

Yep we needed Kravtsov. Who is now a 4th liner in Vancouver

And…awww “you can live with it” aren’t you special

We actually NEED Chytil to score, who hasn’t scored in 16 games now

See, that's the difference between me & you. I can live with the Rangers giving up a few picks for Patrick Kane, because I know what he can bring to a team. Both on the ice and mentally for the younger guys. Something you likely know nothing about because it's abundantly obvious your hockey knowledge is minimal. There are no rose color glasses here. Is Kane a defensive stalwart? Absolutely not. Is he as big of a liability as you are making him out to be? Absolutely not.

Oh, and if they win the cup, I'll be over the fukkin moon, not just living with it.

I have been clear in my view as to who I thought they needed. Kane was not it initially, But he is not the reason for all the defensive issues which Ryan nicely pointed out. To place the blame on him is an easy exercise and given who they have here now, the hope has to be they can figure it out. That's on the coaching staff to educate and make sure all are on board with the system and the players to execute. Both have been lacking. But can we all stop with the I told you sos, at least until we see how this all plays out

I know I'm a clown. I'm not the one here complaining on the day. Data shows Kane was more net positive then a net negative on the night. You need to pick a lane a stick to it.
