See, that's the difference between me & you. I can live with the Rangers giving up a few picks for Patrick Kane, because I know what he can bring to a team. Both on the ice and mentally for the younger guys. Something you likely know nothing about because it's abundantly obvious your hockey knowledge is minimal. There are no rose color glasses here. Is Kane a defensive stalwart? Absolutely not. Is he as big of a liability as you are making him out to be? Absolutely not.
Oh, and if they win the cup, I'll be over the fukkin moon, not just living with it. - NYR11
He’d rather have given up 5 picks for Jeannot |

My hockey knowledge says a bunch of finesse guys that avoid contact don’t win cups. We’ll see who’s right |

I know I'm a clown. I'm not the one here complaining on the day. Data shows Kane was more net positive then a net negative on the night. You need to pick a lane a stick to it. - tomburton99

I mean I wish that logic was true for Kane. But it's not. He's been a part of 3. Winning a Conn Smythe in one and scoring the GWG in another.
You can not like him, but you need to better with writing as to why. Just stick to he's garbage defensively.
Watch me, I'll show you. |

So not thinking Kane was the right fit for this team means I’m not a Rangers fan and I don’t want them to win? |

Let's break it down and not be lazy about it. Skip this post if you want as I'm about to go into Saver territory.
First goal against was created out of the opposite corner of Kane. Trocheck left 2 players in front of the net with Schneider to engage a player who was being pursued by Harper and posed minimal danger in the corner if any. He got caught and the goal was scored.
Kane's Primary responsibility there is to have a proper gap against the attacking defensemen on the point (who was actually a forward when a pinch was made earlier) and not let him come in back door or leave him entirely wide open for a shot from the point. Secondarily he should be slumping down to help should the center vacate because the attacking players in the slot are more dangerous, this is where he gets caught a little in between. Kane could have left his man and engaged the shooter more directly but that would have left Dowd completely open at the point. All of this is precipitated by Trocheck being a bit too aggressive and failing to pick off the pass. In the end, the shot came from an uncovered forward which was not Kane's primary defensive assignment on the opposite side of the slot. Damn near perfect shot too.
Second goal, Fox has a shot blocked in the offensive zone which allows Wash to break out. It starts as a 3 on 2 with Kane and Fox backchecking. Mikola comes back and Kane correctly goes to pick up the 3rd attacking player A3...but there are 2 more attacking players coming. Why? The pass is made from the side wall to A4 (Oshie) so Kane releases on A3 and plays the pass from A4 back to A3 as he is already in the shot lane...Instead of shooting or passing because Kane is there, A4 finds A5 who scores off the pad of Mikola. Where was the rest of the backchecking forwards? Kreider and Trocheck changed instead of backchecking. If Kane locks in on A3 there, A4 walks right down the slot and shoots. Kane did the best he could here given the situation.
Going back to the original point though...and why I took exception to your lazy +/- jab.
Kane was directly involved in 2 goals for...and while he was on the ice for two 5v5 goals against and while that doesn't change his stat line, blaming him would be misplaced.
This doesn't mean he plays good defense, it simply illustrates that a -1 stat line in the scheme of the game is misleading at best and disingenuous without context.
Sorry for the rambling. - climbdenali12
Love the breakdown. You're right. The first isn't primarly his fault. But he also doesn't do anything to try and stop Aube-Kubel from getting the shot off.

BUT BUT BUT Niederreiter is a -13. He obviously doesn't play any defense!!! We don't need that kind of liability.

I’ll take his +49 the 2 seasons prior over his -13 this year. And if you’ve watched him play he’s far from the defensive liability Kane is. |
