0 for 20 over the past 6 games on the power play has nothing to do with the goalies

Oh the powerplay has been ridiculously bad, no doubt. Doesn't detract from the fact that our two rookie goalies have let in a few stinkers as well. I was pointing out that losing your two starting G isn't ideal when you're attempting a playoff push, but you're right to shine the light elsewhere as I certainly am not blaming two green tenders for the losses. For one, the team's gotta step up for the noobs, and two - just like Gus last year - the coach has *gotta* play the rookies more, get them some seasoning, so when things like this happen we aren't shouldering the burden on two kids with no time in the show.

I maintain that all the issues this team has starts with DJ. Every game they play he is outcoached. People need to stop hiding behind waiting for new ownership; fire the man, bring in an interm coach and then fire Dorion when new ownership steps in.

Ottawa should win against the better teams. Better teams will want the Sens to make the playoffs so they're easy to beat! Excellent strategy, someone tell the other teams to lose.

Yes the rookie goalie situation does not help the overall team confidence.
Looking on the bright side, your team has a lot of good young players and should be competitive for years to come.
Hopefully one day the Bruins with Marchand, Bergeron, Krejci, Hall etc will age out and drop off.
Penguins will need a rebuild.
The Caps have already started.
Tampa's core is not getting younger.
Playoffs are a legit hope for next year for the Sens. This year you are in tough but if you can win a couple this week you're still in it.

Soogard is a big goalie. He takes up a lot of net, but his agility needs work. He is not great at going post to post and has been beaten pretty cleanly by in tight chances when he needs to move rather than just stick a leg out. It’s fixable but needs seasoning in the AHL.

Mandolese is bit more of a project. Some decent tools but I sort of get Hoggard vibes. Not supernatural looking in the goal.

As much as I knocked the pick, Merilainen is putting up solid numbers in SM-liiga with a 2.02 GAA and .918 SV%. He’s only 20 years old so several years away but he’s looking like the best possibility for a system developed goalie.

Assuming Talbot moves on, I am not sure Soogard and Forsberg are a tandem I’d run with. Forsberg is an ok back up but an everyday guy would be idea. Slim pickings on free agency with the likes of Quick, Varlamov, Andersen, Bernier, and Khudobin who could realistically all call it a career.

It would be interesting to see if RFA Jeremy Swayman could be brought to town. Likely could sign a reasonable bridge deal if acquired. More established but looking for a break. Unlikely as a division rival. But you never know.

This is a good podcast "Coming in Hot" with Brent Wallace, Jason York and Bobby Ryan.
They offer a perspective from guys who actually played professionally in the NHL which is always interesting. Here is the link to their latest which deals with what's going on with the Sens lately. If you value an informed analysis it would be well worth a listen.

Agreed, I've been watching those for a while as well - some really interesting stories come from Bobby Ryan fairly regularly about the late-Melnyk era. But it's definitely a very honest appraisal of the team, and that particular episode gets into the psychology of a young team facing this kind of pressure. Always worth a listen.

There's also some interesting rumors around Carter Hart being available from PHI now that they fired their GM. He wouldn't be available for the "playoffs", but Hart seems like a very Chychrun-type addition. Very cost-controlled for this year and next year at $4.0M, and would certainly be a missing link.
