I dont follow the news close enough so maybe the fans can tell me. Why is management riding the fence on "one last ride" and rebuilding? Why re sign the vets last year if they weren't going to push for playoffs?
Letang/Crosby/malkin aren't getting younger next year. - Aaron_85
It's mainly Hextall. His whole MO has never been making big and aggressive moves. I think there is a big disconnect between what Hextall wants versus what everyone else wants in the organization. I am a big believer in trading 1st round picks for young NHL talent. He seems to think holding those 1st round picks is important. Why that is, none of us have any idea. He did an amazing job getting our whole top 6 locked in at good value deals, but he has taken the cap space he had and the limited draft capital he had and wasted it.
It was a big miss by Lemieux when he hired him. One of the few things Mario has missed since 1984 when he came here. |

Here’s the thing, Domi went for a 2025 2nd rounder. Your 3rd line could had been Bertuzzi-Domi-Nino. Push Carter-Heinen to the 4th.
I’d argue to could had sent Carter somewhere with a future 3rd round pick. Teams are eating salary for 5th round picks |

Would have likely had to give Chicago a 1st instead of a 2nd to take McGinn
So more like 2 1sts and a 2nd to assemble that line |

It’s a really big failure of due diligence by the FO. This was a buyers market and apparently Hextall really only had two targets: Miller and Chychrun. He backed out of Chychrun because he failed to create the cap flexibility to acquire two medium sized contracts and forward was a bigger need. He got told no on Miller and then got left holding his pud with no idea what to do with himself so he overpaid for a washed player that doesn’t bring the skill set we need (scoring goals).
Lesson learned, FSG. Next time someone says they can’t put their plan into writing, believe them at their word and assume they have no plan. |

Um so based on the Friedman rumors apparently we might be part of a 4 team blockbuster trade with the Canucks and us being the leaders of this deal. Apparently they have been talking for a few days working on it and may get it done by 3pm....I guess we definitely would lose Pettersson and picks if this is true.
Edit another rumor had Hex potentially inquire about Hayes... |

Honestly, I’d be perfectly ok with that. You shed salary to potentially try to resign Domi. If you can sign Domi, then youve successfully shed the contracts of McGinn and Carter, which is $6 mil to use in free agency/trades
|
|
|
|
Bonino at 2 mil for the 4th line center and 3rd line spot for when we have injuries would have been a fine trade deadline day. Not a big improvement to the team but at least no overspending or (frank) up trades.

We haven’t made the team worse. Our roster with Granlund and Bonino is better then it was two weeks ago. |

I agree with you, Miller would be a great acquisition for the Penguins as I, along with many others here, have said for the last week. But they are one of the few teams that it would make sense for. I couldnt careless what happens after 3-4 years. This team will be terrible after our core retires, everyone here is ready for it. So am I willing to pay for a guy like Miller for those 3-4 years? Sure I am. Am I willing to overpay for a guy like that who himself will be 30 before his new contract even kicks in? No, and most teams wont either.
The fact Rutherford is even fielding offers for Miller after signing him to that extension tells you how he values him in the whole grand scheme of things. - SuperHenderson13
Diehards feel this way, but interest in the Pens has already declined steeply in Pittsburgh. The larger fan base will be screaming for a rebuild soon. |

That’s not really the issue at hand. Yes Granlund is better than Kapanen and Bonino is better than Blueger but we didn’t really move the needle at all and our cap flexibility is shot to poop now because of the Granlund contract. It’s one thing to not really improve this year because this team has so many issues that it would be insanely hard to fix mid season, but the Granlund acquisition prevents us from doing anything this offseason either unless something unforeseen happens |

Yeah idk. Maybe Flyers would be involved maybe Hayes to Vancouver, Miller to us, a top 4 LHD coming back to us, Pettersson going to Vancouver with picks, and a 3rd team to take cap space back and give us a top 4 LHD. Maybe Anaheim? Plus I would assume Dumo would potentially moved for cap space? Idk Maybe this is why the Petry rumor happened maybe he is someone who would move for cap space. Idk I want to think logically, but none of our moves really had a lot of logic behind them. |

I think there has to be something more happening. I just don't know what or how. Since we don't have a shot at Bedard this year, I'm good with trading this and next years firsts to make a big play.
Teams that could be involved in a 4 team deal other than us and Vancouver?
St Louis seems to still be shopping Krug and Parayko.
Calgary looks like they are going to Flame out and havent done a thing.
Florida is right on that fence as well... are they really just going to stand still?
Anaheim has Gibson, Henrique and a bunch of pretty good UFA's hanging out.
San Jose seems to be wanting to make deals still.
The problem with the scenario with all of these team is that the Pens are probably in the most desperate spot, needing the most help to make deals happen without cap space.... not a good position to be in value wise.

I don't believe interest is down all that much. I think there's a multitude of reasons ticket sales are down. Nightmare construction around the arena and 20% inflation on necessities are leading the pack. Local tv ratings are still really good the last I heard. Penguins fanbase is pretty solid. Not a bunch of bandwagoners, but sure, there's some of those.
Count me as someone who doesn't want a 10 year rebuild because we total f'd up with seriously bad long term contracts. I do not believe this team is winning a cup this year. I think they could have been a dark horse with some better off-season work, but Hextall blew that. |

That was Granlund. I don’t think he has the cap to do something stupid to save his job.
I guess he could still trade Pettersson |
