Yeah, they had the cap space to fit him, so should pay off.

But they don't need it. This isn't a team that should be retooling. They are beyond the (frank)ed-wall.

Remember in 2003 when the Leafs traded away EVERYTHING at the trade deadline? Like they Housley and Wesley and Gilmour and, and, and . . I can't even remember what else. Nolan? Anyway, then in 2004 the lockout comes. 29 teams in the NHL were like the squirrel in that fable with the squirrel and the grasshopper.

We had nothing. We were beyond the (frank)ed-wall. No prospects to step in, so we had to go out and overpay for has-beens to come here and almost be. Because of poor management stacked on top of poor management it took 10 years after this for someone to come along and point out that there's no coming back once you're over the (frank)ed wall. You're (frank)ed.

So you begin the process of blowing up everything you have so that you can get good stuff that helps you over the wall.

Vancouver has been teetering for a few years now, but they're over - and everyone knows it. Everyone but them, it would seem.

Their fanbase would never support a full rebuild, unfortunately. Worst fans ever. I remember when I moved to BC they had a great team, then after one bad season around .500, people were actually talking about relocation.
As a leafs fan, I was like “wait, this is a good year for us, and we still sellout games”
