Well I don’t think too much of Barrie, might be a decent prospect and I don’t care about mid round firsts at this stage but there’s still 3 years left on the new guys deal so it’s not a rental

Ekholm logs tough minutes in Nashville. He'll be the main shutdown guy in Edmonton, providing some needed insulation for Nurse. Also slots Ceci in a role he belongs. Bouchard takes over PP1 from Barrie, with Nurse the next option. Disrupts the chemistry on that PP, but McDavid, Draisitl, RNH should be able to adapt quickly. Better 5-on-5 play is worth whatever modest decline you get in the PP. Ekholm is also on the roster for 3 playoff runs. So they turned a 4/5 PP specialist into a top pair D, and paid a late 1st and a prospect that wasn't developing as hoped. Good deal for the Oilers.

We took on more salary.

Who are all the d-men moved for 1st rounders?

Orlov? He's not the style that the Oilers needed. And he's a UFA in 2 months. You want to give up a 1st for that?

McCabe? He had a partial NTC and may not have been an option. Also more of a 4/5 guy whereas Ekholm is a 2/3.

Gavrikov? Probably takes a 1st to get him. And again, he walks in a couple months?

Karlsson? Chychrun? Highly unlikely they were coming here. And don't forget, one of the reasons why a 1st and Schaefer was needed was to dump Barrie's contract. He's had a nice year on the PP. But he's a 5-on-5 liability. I'm sure Holland tried to pawn Barrie off on teams like Detroit, Vancouver, Chicago to just absorb his cap hit and the response was that you better add a 2nd or a guy like Schaefer. So I look at this as a 1st for 3 years of Ekholm, and you give away Schaefer to make Barrie disappear.
