His defensive instincts are poor (as are Seth's), he is consistently on the wrong side of the play, the wrong half of the ice, over pursues, etc. If the Hawks didn't have a glut of young D waiting in the wings, i'd say sure, keep him as a #7. BUT, he has been drawing 2nd pairing minutes regularly. That doesn't say 6 or 7D to me. I'd rather see any of Phillips, Mitchell, Regula, etc. pull regular minutes at this point than watch Caleb. He is what he is. I'm not real worried that he becomes Forsling or Rutta pulling regular minutes and being a contributor on playoff teams. Let him go. figure out which of the young D you have can cut it in the NHL.

Totally agree. Let these spots go to kids who will actually be considered for the future. We’ve managed to shed Gustafsson, Stillman, de Haan, and McCabe. But we still have a glut of plugs who are fine for revving that tank engine, but don’t need to be around past this season. Murphy, Tinordi, the new guy from COL, C Jones, time to go. Teams always want a few extra bodies for long playoff runs, the only one who doesn’t need more is Boston. Let the kids come up and play before the Rockford playoffs start, clear these expansion draft level players out.

I could see a Kane return, but I hope not next year. Maybe on a one year team friendly contract the following year or the following year if his play merits it.

I'd be fine with them signing Kane to a 1 year deal. With the understanding I'm going to trade you at the deadline, would Kane do it? Blackhawks have lots of money to spend?

I am curious to see where Kane goes once the season is over?
- BetweenTheDots

Depends on how much he likes playing with Panarin and what type contract he will want. He will not be back with Rangers if he wants more than 3Mx 3 yrs

Murphy and Caleb Jones as a bottom pair? or as 6th and 7th defenders. Murphy is a given for the next 3 years. They will not be able to give him away without a sweetener.
If they choose to sign Caleb on a cheap one year deal he could fill in as needed or sit in the press box. Maybe LR can teach him something. He seems to have improved slightly recently.

I guess Kane then becomes the NHL version of LeBron James?

I don't think Kane would come back here on just a 1-year deal. If that's the case, he'd probably sign with an immediate contender on a extreme discount and then sign a long term deal with his hometown team in Buffalo and ride off into the sunset.

Where can he go? Cap goes up a whopping $1 million per team, he's not getting any younger.

So you would sign a 3 year $12 million dollar deal instead of 1 year at $8 mil?

He'd be traded to a contender anyways.

He can stay with the Rangers 3 x 3. It is apparent winning trumps all. He is (should be) set for life, I doubt his decision has anything to do about money now

with how hard its going to be to move term next year without retention. IE worse then this year. if you can move murph to anybody without retention without regard to return I do it.

he has been for the most part healthy and played OK, but that is not really typical.

look how underwhleming the return was for Lafferty and McCabe? and soon to be Kane.

- kmw4631

A 1st and 2nd for those two is underwhelming? C'mon man...

Why would you want him back here for only one year, if you promised to trade him? Sell more Kane jersey's? What benefit would it be to the team, especially if he plays like he did the first 50 games of the season

Guiding a team in cap trouble.....much of which he created. He had no vision other than to try and save his own job. Rebuild/retool, then goes out trades Boqvist, etc. and signs T. Johnson, S. Jones, McCabe, Fleury, etc. in an attempt to save his own ass.
If you're gonna rebuild, then rebuild. You managed to get out from under the Seabrook, Hossa, Keith contracts, and put yourself back into hell

- TheTrob

Well I’m very glad he saved his job and won two additional Cups. And like you I’m very disappointed he was unable to draft well and stock up prospects to give the team additional depth. And it’s unfortunate that, unlike Boston, he wasn’t able to get the core players to sign smaller contracts to be able to ensure there was room available for additional better depth players.

At the end of the day I’m happy to have experienced the best and most successful decade in Blackhawk history. And like it or not, Bowman was a big part of that.

Murphy and Tinordi on for the 1st 3 goals against last night. On the 1st one, Murphy tripped himself trying to do a cross-over.

For god's sake KD, please send Murphy anywhere, for anything.

I just read in the Buffalo blog that they traded for Riley Stillman from Vancouver. Does this mean that Murphy to Buffalo is dead (if it was even alive to begin with)?
- powerenforcer

Stillman is a LD and the Buffalo fans are still wanting a RD. There is hope yet.

He's a good player, and this is part of the process of the rebuild, try to sign good players on 1 year deals and trade them at the deadline for picks and prospects. KD seems shrewd enough to do this.

The analogy was him signing something like an incentive-laden 1-year $4mil deal to a contender like Vegas, NYR, Car, TB, etc. for another Cup shot and then signing a 4-year $24-28mil deal with Buffalo to finish his career. His style of play will allow him to play at a high-caliber for the next 5 or so years.

I think if you told Quenneville in 2017 that Murphy would not only be extended for more than league minimum, but wear an A for this franchise… he’d probably laugh for a solid five minutes. How far we’ve fallen.

Incorrect. Uncle Dale had them in cap hades when Stan got the chair. Had to do a sell-off of much of the team's depth, filled it back in and won two more. Without his efforts they are the '85 Bears.

Pretty sure everyone and their mother said the same kind of thing about Lafferty when he was acquired. Maybe we just wait and see if he can actually play hockey. And for what he is, Tinordi has been fine. Can you really have 2/3 of your blueline made up of prospects?
