Just heard on the radio the Pens and Canucks had talks on JT Miller. Said they reached impasse, but might revisit. Per Matt Vensel. - madmike71
Apparently it seems it would be possible for VAN to retain on this final year of his current deal and not the extension that kicks in next year.

Interesting. I wonder if that situation has ever happened where a team signs a guy to an extension and then trades him before it kicks in. That's definitely a Rutherford move.

Most GMs know better than to do that. VAN is a poop show. |

Hmmm…. So if Vancouver were to agree to take the McGinn contract this could theoretically get done if they liked our package. |

I'd be very nervous about trading for JT Miller, especially given the price VAN would likely seek. Miller has had a pretty down year at 5 on 5. He has 54 points in 59 games, which is good, but 24 of that 54 is from the powerplay.
I am all for buying low on a guy, but you had better be sure because of his new extension. |

Pens PP sucks balls so he could probably help out on that front.

It’s kinda one of those situations where you have to ask who else are you gonna get? We’re not packing it in while Sid and Geno are still playing at this level so we need a 3C desperately. Miller is a swing for the fences as a guy that could completely outplay the price we paid to acquire him because he has talent and we bought low. Or he could be washed and we’re no worse off than we were before aka going nowhere until the big guns hang them up.
I’d rather make the move with a potential to give us a legitimate spark than rearrange the deck chairs with more low upside acquisitions. |

Who cares we haven’t properly used cap space in like a decade. Not being able to sign free agents would be a blessing for this team |

Yeah but if the cap ends up going up next year, he could be Zucker's replacement. Having another PPG player would be nice. |

I get the upside argument and the idea that in 4-5 years, is probably wont matter. If Miller plays well and if the Penguins are willing to eat some of the contract, he could be a good trade target in the last 2 years of the contract (only if he is still playing and playing well at that age).
But I largely agree, if you want to swing for the fences, this isnt the worst idea. Honestly not sure what Vancouver would want. I think I would put a guy like Meier at more value than Miller given he is a RFA and a younger player. If Hextall makes a deal like this, it's because someone in the organization put him under pressure to do so IMO. |

I could see Van being a good trade destination especially since they are familiar with our prospects.
Maybe something like: Miller (25% retained), Garland, Lazar deal for Dumo, McGinn, Bluegar, 2nd round pick, Conditional pick next year, Legare and Hallander. |

Hahaha, true. Maybe we can get Vancouver to retain 1/1.5 mil but doubtful. Def need them to retain on the end of this contract though. I'm not worried about the years whatsoever, just that 8mil cap hit |

One of the reasons I was wanting Vejmelka was if we could run a random of Vej and Jars. I think with Jarry having this hip issue it would be best for him to stay healthier being in a tandom situation. That or we just move on from him and get Gibson or Demko. |

Is the cap going up next year? All these RSN's going bankrupt can't be a good sign. I'm assuming local revenues are added into the pool of money for which the cap number is derived.....don't know that for sure however.
