So this morning I called and Vented to a friend who works for Philly and he laughed and said he had flashbacks from when Hex was with the Flyers.
He said Hex did the same thing with signing veterans (Carter to 2 year bigger/medium contract) then giving the reasoning that he will have a prospect take that spot in a few years. My friend said they would go through long losing streaks and he gave the same excuse that we look good on paper and not to make any moves at that time. The locker room during that tenure knew they could get away with anything and were comfortable because he didn't really make many moves. Hex wanted older veteran players mostly with the thought that the young prospects (who never really get a chance with the big clubs) could be mentored by the older plays. He also discussed that he would build up the prospect pool, but they would never get a chance because of signing veterans and others to take the spots. Most prospects would leave their system when they became free agents and wouldn't re-sign due to getting a chance with another team.

Just saw the replay of Carter getting out of the way of that point shot from Barrie last night. He's already retired. He's just waiting for the coach to confirm it. Sully likes whipping the broken down plow horse I guess.

Why would I trade a valuable heart and soul player for an overpaid floater bum?

Can’t have one of your top notch playoff goal producers out from a blocked shot.

Agree 100% but as long as Sully is here certain guys are getting jerseys no matter how bad they play. Really sucks because we do have some kids who have no doubt earned a decent look...DOC, Nylander, Puustinen, Hallander. Guarantee we could make a much better 3rd line with them than what we roll out every night. Cupboard isn't necessarily empty, we just refuse to look in it.

I'd do it. I'd run a kid line on the third line. Not like any of the vets have showed a pulse. Maybe give Poehling a shot.

My opinion is DOC is a better offensive player, not even factoring in the size, than anyone we could call up so I wouldn't expect much. But just some enthusiasm of guys trying to earn spots would do some good. Not as good as better players in trades if you could find them though. But maybe helps you squeak in.

I would sell any player not named Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Rakell and Guentzel. If you gave me enough, I'd trade Rak and Guentz too. I'd like to keep Poehling.

There's no fixing this team at the TDL. Why would you even try considering the conference they're in?

- madmike71

I've been saying for a long time, this team isn't good enough to trade top picks and prospects to try and fix. Doesn't matter that they signed all these vets in the off-season, it's just throwing assets away.

But they're also too close to a playoff spot to go into sell mode. It might be the smart thing to do, just can't see it. Probably try to add a couple 3rd liners from the bargain bin in an attempt to get in.

Nah. Not really. But he’s a good scapegoat.
